buying winter tires

I will be buying winter tires soon for my 2002 Pro 5. As the price of winter tires can be a bit expensive I wanna buy smaller rims and tires. Does anybody know how small of a tire I can go with? Also if there is anyone in the Saskatoon area that knows where I can get a set of cheap steal rims and winter tires, let me know.

if you go to www.tirerack.com and enter in that you have a Protege LX or DX, it says that you can get a 175/70-14 tire. Other than the fact that the LX/DX Proteges are 4 bolt wheels, I don't see why these wouldn't fit.

For the P5 go with 185/65/14, that's what I did. The manual also recommends that size.

I will go with 185/70R14 for the simple reason that they are cheaper than 185/65R14 (for the same tires, Michelins X-Ice) they are 105$ each for the 70 series and 125$ for the 65 series(canada)

this is stupid 70 series will fit easily and will have some room left between the tire and the strut and between the tire and the inner fender...so....simple choice

As for shopping in saskatoon, check the canadian tire flyers. Every few weeks they do a buy three, get one free or similar deal. I went to canadian tire last year and paid about 650-700 for 4 tires, rims, installation and balancing. And I went with 185/60/15. So by going with a smaller tire you may pay even less.

I got some 16'' steelies wrapped in 205/50r16 studded hankook w409 iPike's. Best winter tire ever!

The larger the tire in winter...the slipper it will be...

it's like trying to cut butter with a baseball bat.

You always want the skinny one for the winter...like rally cars!...they got 185/60R15...if I remember correctly

I bought some Kuhmo Ecsta ASX all season tires for 17" and I drove to new york and ride nice on the snow. But when u drive on dry and rain it fell like the car glides. When I had the other tires Kumho Ecsta and they work better.

I had a set of 2054017's and had them "Siped". They handled so great even in snow that I didn't need snow tires. You might try siping your existing tires to save some money and the grip better in corners.
