burning smell - oil in the turbo (TSB #)

I have a 2006 MS6 with about 54K miles - about 6 months out of warranty. I just started noticing a burning smell when I come to a stop. I had the dealership check it out and they mentioned a TSB regarding oil leaking in to the turbocharger. They requested my oil change records - which in my case consisted of date, mileage, and oil type written on the lid of the oil filter boxes. They sent those in to Mazda yesterday and told me today that Mazda would pay for a new turbo ($1400) but I would have to pay the labor ($800).

Does anyone have any specifics on the TSB that might help me get them to pay labor - or should I just count myself lucky that they will pay for the parts?

Thanks in advance.

yea, bad crankcase evac design keeps the turbo from being able to drain oil at low engine speeds... the path of least resistance for the oil is out of the exhaust... your stock cats hide the billowing smoke that is a result of that

previous fix was for mazda to use 5w40 oil... now this calls for a new turbo replacement

if you are under warranty this should be no cost to you.... your new turbo will smoke/burn oil eventually

Yeah, you're out of warranty so they don't have to pay anything. Now, if you felt up to it, you could just have them give you the turbo and install it yourself, but they may charge you something in that case. My guess is that the dealership is trying to get you to pay for their labor when Mazda has decided to cover you, which sounds like a shady thing for them to do. I would think that if Mazda decided to cover the turbo under the TSB then they would cover the installation as well.

You could call Mazda USA with your VIN and ask them what their decision was about your warranty...if they say they covered everything but the labor then head to a different dealership and get the work done.
