I bought an 86 Corolla fastback for $200 today. It isn't the GTS, but I got a 4AG engine out of an MR2 along with the wiring harness and computer, all for $200, including the car.

The body is in great shape. I am gonna drop in the 4AG, pick up a GTS rear end, and use it as my beater/drift car for a while.

nice deal - just had a chat with a friend recently about the AE86 Corolla Levins - awesome car. have fun and good luck on the MP3

Hope you know there is alot more to the Swap then what you just Mentioned.....The SR-5 AE86 might as well be a different car.

Here are the listing for the differences in parts pertaining to the engine swapping. So you can decide if you want to go through with it........

4A-GE engine (and all brackets to support peripheral equipment)

Most peripherals such as A/C, P/S pumps and compressors

Complete intake and exhaust runners and headers

Fuel pump and lines

Gasoline tank, evaporation and related items

Clutch fork and fluid line locations and bell housing (GTS and SR5 has opposite side clutch fork and slave due to the differences in the exhaust runner location and is extremely important not to run fluid lines next to exhaust systems)

Transmission is the same unit as the GTS (T50C), however the speedometer gear is different, and must be replaced to read correct speed on the cluster. (due to different final drive ratio)

EFI computer triggers and sensors

AFM or MAP

Air Temp Sensor (MAP only)

distributor assembly (MAP and AFM based are different)

Igniter and Coils (different for AFM and MAP based)

EFI Computer (MAP or AFM specific)

House Harness and Engine Harness and related junction boxes

All relays and VSV triggers

peripheral VSV triggers

Battery terminals and fusible link terminals and fuse box

some of these can be ignored for carburetor use such as Weber Side-draft carburetors

Ignition system

Dash Cluster missing check engine (W) lamp

Labor and Installation Professional who can proceed properly so as not to create more problems (cheap or un-skilled installer would render the 4A-GE less powerful and unbelievably unreliable.

Oil cooler, block and lines

Clutch and flywheel

================

Now as for other items that are mechanically different from the GT-S (4A-GE equipped models):

Differential carrier

Differential gear, axles, hub assembly (need 4A-GE unit to utilize commonly available LSD)

Rear disk brakes vs. drum and related lines and cables (except Japanese GT)

Steering rack, knuckles, tie rods

Propeller shaft

Clutch fork, assembly, cables, lines, bell housing (as mentioned above)

Front and rear suspension are different from factory in spec but can be interchanged (Not significant as most owners replace them with aftermarket systems anyway)

========

Body and trim differences: (Not really needed but why not list it)

Seats, panels and trim

Outside mirrors (some were equipped with power as on the GTS, while others were fixed manual units)

Tags and Emblems (obviously...)

Front bumper lower spoiler

Fender protector on 86-87 models

Trunk moldings on 86-87 2 door coupes

Rear spoiler missing on 84-85 SR5 3 door hatchbacks

Color variations inside and outside

Body side moldings

Number of spot welding in key frame members on 86-87 models

ETS Cassette Radio player (Ok, not important at all)

Rear Wipers, Power Windows, Sunroof only optional on GTS

Auto Climate Control (Japan Only)
=============================================

i dont get it.......whats so cool about those type of cars?......
ps: sorry if i ****** up the thread nc

Whats so cool about them? There Handling ability.....A car that was introduced in 1983 with a 5 Link Rear End, LSD, 52/48 Weight Balance, 5 Speed, and Great 4.30 Gearing, Quick Ratio Power Steering, and its responsiveness......

I am a big 80s car fan and have always Loved the 86 for its handling chacteristics and looks. You honestly have to drive one or Ride in one to understand.....

Many people like the 86 cause of Initial D and not for any other Reason........I owned one and have yet to find a car that I could control with such precise accuracy as I could that car almost indescribable.........

The Fun Factor with that car is great as you almost never see them and those who know what it is give you the Thumbs up or double takes......Or when you are Sliding around a Corner in perfect control Chasing someone down a Windy Road who cant figure out how a Old POS is keeping up with there Newer Vehicle....*Ahh the Memories*

Just to give you an Idea

Can I argue this point? I really don't see the fascination in these... My roomate had one (a real GT-S hatch, not an SR-5) I'm comparing this to my beat up old 1st gen, but that car was slower, handled worse, was heavier, not nearly as fun to drive.. (yes, I drove it many times) They both had good weight distribution, LSD, 4.10vs 4.30 gears, quick 5spd etc etc.. Looks are a matter of personal opinion. Square vs crurve.. but the general impression this car gave was just 80's econo box with a higher redline than most.

He didn't buy the car because it was an AE-86.. He got it as a hand me down from his uncle and we didn't even know it was supposed to be a "cool" car until I started frequenting forums. It was always called the "Hoopty" or piece of s*** car. Sure they can be cool if you drop a ton of $$$ into, but so can just about anything...

To this day I still don't understand the fascination... Unique? maybe... I'm a big fan of the odd & unusual, but I just can't get into this one...

That being said.. Finding one (yeah, it's an SR-5) for $200 still is a pretty good find...

You are free to argue the point, Different Strokes for different Folks.....

Personally I loved the car and it suited my Driving Style, the car definetly doesnt appeal to everybody its a squarish ecnobox, but to me thats what gave its Flare.

I will own another one someday in the near future....When I get this 20V in it, If your in the VA, Md, DC area I will be glad to take you for a ride :)

Cheers,

alas, TX is kinda far from there.....

I'll take you for a ride in my 1st gen once I get the turbo part done... (just gimme a year or so.... I'm broke)

I always thought it was fairly cheap to make those cars pretty decent drift cars... under 10,000$ could make a nice Corrolla.

i got a hachi (ae86) for $400 GTS but with no LSD. and it has s*** load of rust everywhere. i m a rookie at drifting but post some pix of your hachi and i ll post mines!
