Boost on Auto (I know it's been discussed)

ok, first off, I have read the thread here --> http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=33154&highlight=auto+boost and got some good info, but it's a lot of old posts in there.

I'm wondering how many of you are running Turbos on your Auto P5 transmission.

What problems have you had?
What extras have you added (Tranny Cooler, Colder plugs, Royal Purple, etc.)?
What kit are you running?
What boost do you run at?
How long have you been turbo'd?
Any other usefull tips?
Would you ever do it again?

I know the popular answers to the above questions form the other thread, but again, the people that posted in there are a limited audience. I'm sure many have boosted autos since. A lot of people aren't re-visiting that thread and it got pretty side-tracked, so I think a new thread is justified.

subbed for info.

my tranny might be a lil weaker than the p5's ... i have a 1.6L tranny so dont know if it will be useful. but i have been boosted for 6 months, and was boosting 9psi daily and then my tranny went. got it rebuilt and strengthened, and also added a tranny cooler and it wasent slipping at all and shifting hard. as long as u keep the boost at 7ish, tranny should be fine ... the hard part is not raising the boost

Maybe I can answer some of your questions. As I have asked the same thing. I too have an auto P5 but decided to stay NA. Well here are some answers to your questions.

Since your auto keep the boost level under 8psi. If you go turbo a tranny cooler will be highly recommended and Turfburn is the man if you need a tranny cooler. I would get the Hiboost kit because many auto P5's here are running the kit and they love it. Also when doing maintenace check your oil every so often and change your oil every 3000 miles. Also you'll need to change your brake pads as well. All these answer came from other forum members.

So hope this helps.

thanks for the posts so far. Anyone else have anything to add from their experiences?

What is everyone using for Engine Management. Vortech FMU okay for 5 or 6 psi?

Talk to Bazooka Joe from NEPOC. He's got a beautifully boosted p5 with an auto. I asked him almost the exact same questions at one of our meets. He said he stays out of the boost unless he's passing someone and he takes it easy on the car. I don't know if I have that kind of willpower.

Lol,...yeah, that's the tough part. Everyone says as long as you have willpower, it'll be fine. But once you get boost hungry, you're looking for problems. I can honestly say that I think (knocks on wood) I'll have the willpower :p

I've actually gotten a few replies from Bazooka-Joe in other threads. From what I remember he hasn't had the kit on his car for a really long time yet though. But so far everything's been pretty good for him.

I'm just surprised at the lack of replies. Is there really that few Auto P5s running turbos?

nothing super crazy. i have some squeaking from the exhaust, but that's not an issue (fixable with some jiggling) OH, torn passenger side motor mount. (got the inserts from Cullen's g/b)

i have recently noticed that first thing in the morning... like the very first time it shifts into 3 (if the car is cold) it slips. if the car is warm it doesn't do it. I think it's just time to change the stock fluid out.

running 1 step colder, have a tranny cooler (6 pass fluidyne) but i haven't installed it yet. soon. and with synth as well. Have the street durometer front and back motor mounts.... well.. if you want to see my mod list.. just check out my cardomain page as it has it all listed.

Eventually I know I'm gonna have to upgrade that tranny, or swap it out for a manual. lolz. I'd love to upgrade and run lotsa boost on it as an auto, but certain companies that make parts for it are just too dam expensive.

Hiboost (deckedoutmp5's old kit) - so i have the haltech f10 as management. Myself and 2 other proteges on the west coast have the haltech and so far none of us have had issues.

<8psi (usually 7ish) But i'm not on it all the time. and usually only use it when getting on the highway.. or maybe... bah who am I kidding.... integra's, civics, mustangs, you name it, i'll try it. hahaha..

Ok, i'm kidding about all those cars. Really, I do mostly use it getting on good old highway #1, and the occasional surprising of "other vehicles". But generally speaking, I'd say I'm somewhat conservative with it's usage.

i have the sport tronic auto. I am glad, b/c it allows me to control the shift points. I let off the gas just briefly b4 taping the shifter and by the time it shifts i'm starting to get back on the gas.

Gimpo is running the kit at 7 to 8 psi for over a year now, and I believe he is not having any tranny issues. As long as you keep it at 7 MAX it will be ok.

BTW Niv, Fedex tried to deliver today but nobody there.

Thx Juan! I just missed them - was at school. I'll get it tomorrow. *rubbing hands with glee bout having that ssqv runnning* :)

i'm not really having tranny issues either, per se. Just that cold start slippage thing, and i think it's just a matter of getting some better fluid in there. I'd still be gentle with your tranny regardless..... Lol..

Of course we have it in stock and has been selling very good lately. We have all the parts in stock and can ship within 4 to 5 days after the order is received.

keep the whp around 170~180 and you probably wont have problems.

Of course, dont let it slip while the trans is gearing if thats the correct term

yeah I've had my kit on for over a year (~16k - 18k miles) I have no tranny coolers or anything. did 6psi daily for the first 9 months or so. Then 8 psi daily after that (never boosted past 8.9 psi). Just let off the gas when the tranny is shifting. have to use the tiptronic all the time. I am going to do a manual swap, i want to boost more! :D Juan I heard that you have those intakes in now. is this true?
