Blown engine with AFC?

Since I didn't want to threadjack on the similar Unichip vs blown engine thread, I thought that I would start an independent thread for the DSM AFC. The question here is whether anyone has reported a blown engine while using the DSM AFC.

Currently, I am using the DSM AFC and loving every minute of it. My car runs so much better now that I have installed this unit. I am planning on purchasing the AFC with FTC when it comes available. However, I am interested in whether anyone has blown their engine while using this unit. If so, it would be great to know what circumstances under which the blown engine occurred, and with what mods were present at the time of engine demise. If this list is short then that is a good thing...I don't recall seeing anyone posting anything to this effect (nothing comes up on forum search either).

Feel free to contribute, but let's try to keep this thread informative only so that people don't have to wad through pages to get the information that they want.

^ true but i think Rainman means with the supplied map? Unichip you cant tune yourself, so its a more valid question, but if you restrict yourself to the supplied map, this question is also valid.

Thanks for the clarification d. That is what I meant. I wanted to know whether anyone had blown with the supplied maps. I know that peepsalot had a bad FMIC map which had the potential to go lean which could have caused a blown engine. However, John caught it in time so that no untoward effects occurred. But, I want to know if anyone has maxed out the supplied maps and blown their engine. This information will help us to determine what is the threshold for mods for each map although this is load and boost dependent.

I blew my engine with the AFC on the stock super map @ 7 psi but I don't blame the AFC since at the moment it happend I was driving normal no WOT or anything the most I had my RPM's was like 4000 and the piston ring on one of the pistons let go my car started knocking and it stalled. At the time I had all the mods in my sig.

hmm this could be a good thread....on my product we only recommend runing up to 9 maybe 10psi with supporting mods, anything above this and I'd have no doubt of a blown engine within 4 months. I can personally atest that the fsde engine will begin to let go at above 11psi daily...I've blown several engines running all sorts of different controllers....I think this wil lbe a good thread if its used to set limitations for the products, lord knows I want to know asap if someone blows a motor running the AFC regardless if it was the afcs fault or not, but we must remember here to differentiate between blaming products and things that are beyond their control.

^^^^Well said John. This is the point here. I want to establish performance guidelines for this product (not that John/DSM hasn't done this to some extent already), not to blame it or any other mod for someone's misfortune. If we can figure out what happens in each case, we can better go about establishing parameters for safe, reproducible performance gains.

It would probably be very beneficial if the mods kept a tight rein on this thread so that it was limited to productive and informative comments only.

^^^Thanks for the contribution lcruz64. This is the type of information that I'm looking for, although here it seems pretty clear that your case wasn't related to your mods, etc.

i have been running the unit for about 8 months now and its still going strong w/o any problems.... knock on wood. i run 9-11 psi daily and 13-15psi several times a week when racing on a dynotuned mapped for my mods.

I finally got my wb02 in this weekend, along with a 3" J-pipe. I am running the stock super-map at stock boost. I have yet to up my boost although with my mods I run a bit higher than pure stock. Just waiting on my IEBC installation once I get a boost solenoid from the wrecker.

Anyway, my AFRs are typically 14.2-14.7 while cruising, 9.7-10.2 under load (boost peaking at 8.7 PSI), and 17.x-21.0 when decerating in gear just before engaging the clutch. Once the car is in neutral the AFR quickly settles back down to 14.x . I haven't had a chance to datalog and see the data graphically, nor have I had a chance to run it on a dyno. However, the numbers aren't too bad. But that is kinda off topic.

Hope that more people will contribute to the discussion so that we can establish the practical limits of this hardware.

i've had the AFC since february...no problems here yet. i want to run a a base map of all 10s to see if the buttdyno can feel the difference
