Blew my Engin on MP3, what to do now???

MP3 717

nothing currently....
Well so we had a lot of rain this last week and I had to go home for lunch. There is only way to go from work and the road had lots of water on it. Well I went through this one area and it killed my car. It took 5 mins to restart the car and it started making this clicking noise. I was not sure what it was since the car ran fine. So today I took the car to my parents and had my dad check. We checked compression and it looked good. Then we changed the oil on my car. It still made the noise so I was going to take it to the shop on Tuesday. I had to unload some stuff in my car at a friends house about 10 mins away and then bring the car back to my parents until it goes to the shop down the road. I am driving along on the road and I hear BAM! CLUNK! and see pieces of metal in my rear view. Oil was on the road and it was not pretty.
So now I have to decide what to do. I think getting another engine (used) and getting it installed would be close to $1000 if not more. :\ Really I only wanted to keep it for another 6 months to a year and then get something else. And I could only sell the car for about $3000 (MAX if I am lucky) with a good engine.
SO two questions..
Would it be easier to sell the car as a whole and what could I get.
OR!
Should I part it out. I think I could get maybe up to 3K if I part it out.
Seats, bumpers, lights, wheels, doors, hood, truck, shifter, header, ext!

What is everyones thoughts???
Thanks

sell me the ecu...or we can trade and you can sell it as a whole hahahaha

on a more serious note, what are your mods?

ROFL! I may be selling it. I will let you know.
All it has is CAI, aero muffler, short shifter, clear corner headlights.
I think that is about it.

Also I did not spell engine right in the title. Sorry.

Well, if your car is not working and you have the stock parts, I would try to part out your stuff, I don't know if you're going to get that much unless it's in mint condition because we all have protege stuff. What I have seen other people do is make a general interest thread where you basically let everyone know that you're thinking of selling or parting out. With the pictures that you post, people will let you know what they're interested in. If you think there's enough interest then part out, if not, then sell it as a whole. Just remember who's your friend when it comes to that ecu ;)

i'll take the rear lip... and shifter housing assembly.. and possibly the trans..and drivers side fender.and c pillars...

I'd take the bumper/lip, and would keep it on an MP3, therefore not needing new paint. I scratched mine up last year and getting this stuff used would be cheaper then repainting...been looking forever for a new set of these

guys, lets not vulture the guys car yet.... its still a perfectly viable car that just needs a new FSDE... which can be had for less than 1000 I'm sure. spend a weekend swapping it (doable with hand tools and an engine hoist), and you should be able to get more than 3K out of it as long as its in decent condition and not 2000000 miles...

I'm assuming this is a blue mica mp3? Either way, if this goes to a part-out, I may be interested in a few things... I'm subbed.

really though guys... lets stop thinking about how his parts help us, and consider that he'll likely be better off keeping the car together and just dropping in a used engine. if you can do the swap yourself, you'll come out way ahead of a part-out.

That's true. But I know if it were me, I really wouldn't have the time for a full swap out and the time to go without a car in that mean time. Gotta work... I would only be able to feasibly work on it on weekends, and it would take at least 2 weekends (for me personally) to do a full swap. So it's a tough decision. If its an option, definitely replace motor and sell the car, you should be able to get more than $3k for it unless there are extensive rust/electrical/mechanical issues. It seems that $4k-$6k is about the running rate depending on location for an MP3.

to me, i would think he'd make more money in a part out. if it's not in his financial gain currently to do so, buy a motor, and swap it. could get one at a junkyard for like 500.00 i think..

a motor swap is easily a single weekend job with 2 people. I pulled the motor outa my isuzu impulse solo in 4 hours, with all hand tools. granted, I'd already had it out and in once already...

the car is already down... so its not hurting him any more or less that way. if he parts it, then he's gotta do a lot more wrench time and i just don't see 4K in parts coming off an MP3, definitely not 6.

if you decide on parting out, there are couple things that i need. id be able to pick em up.

Ya, I guess it could be a 1 weekend deal if you didn't run into any complications... And ya, definately not getting $4k from a partout...

She is a
Blue Mp3
165000
Great looking car beside rock chips no issues.
Here is the deal. Say I put 1k into it and get engine fixed.
Then I can see the tranny going or the clutch next. Just does not seem worth it. Plus MP3 go for 4k usually down here ( the ones I saw)
The hard part is going to be figuring out how much each part is worth and shipping.
I am leaning towards parting but it will be a week and a half before I get the car to my parents.

Fair enough. I would sleep on it tho, ya know? Keep us informed, as it looks like there is a fair amount of interest (and thats just in this small forum) in the part-out.

i would do the clutch right away while you've already got it out.... its another 300 bucks or so, and then its done.

are you able to do the swap yourself?
