Better Ignition Coils

My coil packs will far exceed what I will ever use them for, and would probably even be over kill for the most powerful turbo protege's out there.

Local big rotor teams use them for their 1000hp+ drag cars, and they are nowhere NEAR approching the limits of the bosch HEC715 coils.

they are probably massive overkill for anything anyone would ever do with the FS-DE - but they look cool...and theres nothing wrong with a bit of overkill :)

I gapped my plugs closer, and I seem to have picked up some more power up top. I still think I need a stronger spark though. I am gapped at .22-.23

how much are you boosting?

well yeah, i know that, but i don't understand the reasons, or how..or w/e.

people have run into the issue of blowing out the spark at higher rpms under high levels of boost. so they've been gapping the plugs a lot smaller to prevent it from blowing out.

mhmm.. gotcha now. why don't they just leave them where they are when they buy them?

Pretty much you go there, hand them money, and they make you a metrosexual.

(flame)

:D *resubscrizzle since I had all of my subscriptions deleted*. I'm sure my stock coils won't last forever...

i don't wanna be metro.(help)

ROFL, Good one, Chris!

What about just an aftermarket ignition booster?
There is a stock coil-thingy somewhere (not the part on top of the plugs), right?

...get a Dual igniter from Haltech a couple of MSD 6A and a coil pack from MSD. This will give you very good results.
Juan

Can this be done sans Haltech?

the thing on top of the plugs is the coil. Our car fires the spark plugs in pairs, the spark plugs fire twice during each cycle, one of those sparks being utterly useless, hence the term "wasted spark" for our type of ignition system.

wikipedia said:
An ignition system in a four-stroke cycle internal combustion engine may fire spark plugs in pairs, on both the exhaust and compression strokes. The extra spark on the exhaust stroke has no effect and is thus "wasted". This design is simpler than a conventional ignition system, but the extra sparks reduce the lifespan of components (contact breaker, spark plugs).
Examples of engines using this design include the Buick V6 engine Series I and newer, Harley Davidson V-Twin, BMW Airheads, Citron 2CV, Mazda B engine and Chrysler V10. Some Ford engines also do. Many Honda Motorcycle engines also follow a similar design, to allow for a smaller number of more powerful coils to replace a larger number of smaller coils in the same limited space.

I am boosting 15-17 PSI. I gapped them closer to like .20-.21.

coo thanks. im running the same psi and i was wondering where i should gap my plugs at. i currently have it gapped at .028, and i notice the power dies out a lil up top. i think i'll give the .022 a shot. what plugs are you using?

I use a combintation of two types of gapping tools.

A universal spark guage gapping tool for measuring the gap,

And a wire spark plug gauge for bending the ground strap to where I want it. The little fork-thingys on the ends can be used to bend the ground strap:
