Battery Vent

Hey guys. I just had my CAI put on today and when I picked it up I noticed that the battery vent covers up the CAI so you can't see it. Is this venting needed to keep things cool or is it just purely a cosmetic thing? Any info would be appreciated.(flash)

yes the vent helps keep your battery cool which is good in cars like the speed3 with a high compression ratio because the battery needs to put out maximum power when starting the motor. Soaking it in heat doesnt help this process. If you really want to see the CAI then it would probably be ok to remove/change things

wouldnt the turbocharged engine be lower compression?

EDIT: oh boy have i misunderstood what compression ratio really means. GG me...+_+;

yes, you're right...turbocharged and supercharged engines tend to have lower compression ratios than NA engines.

i took my vent thingie out, as none of my cars in my life had battery cooling, and i want to have as much room as possible once i start tinkering under the hood.

My guess on the battery vent is to keep battery within recommended operating temperatures WHILE engine is running in order to ensure it doesnt suffer from premature wear and tear due to heat stress due to its proximity to engine.. I really dont think its there to help with start crank power but thats IMHO...

A better solution albeit one that would have cost $$$ and rear storage space would have been to put the battery in the rear (help with weight balance and distribution) - Im sure it wasnt done for both reasons

I took my vent off when I first got my 3 and haven't really had any problems. I replaced my orginal battery after 3+ years and 60K+ miles. Figured that was good enough for a stock battery.

And I have kept it off since cause he rubs my F2 intake. and i Have a 2.0L so that means 10:1 CR :)

Yeah, I think I might take mine off also. I have never owned a car that has this feature so I wouldn't think it is life or death that is stay on there. Everything in the engine bay seems to be there to give the engine a neat and tidy look. I honestly don't think everyting is in there to serve a purpose other than appearance. I think it will look better seeing the CAI anyways on it.
