Bad oxygen sensor -- mechanic wants $450!!!

You don't even need the special socket to remove and replace!

Cut the wire off and use a regular socket (impact is 'best') and soak with PB Blaster. Use a box end wrench to install the new one.

The special socket is for removing and re-installing an o2 sensor!

One more vote for uiniversal (see the how-to section IIRC for wiring directions). Solder and heat shrink FTW!

Your right you really dont need it but it makes it easier and faster IMO. Not that its hard at all to do anyways.

Thanks a million, everyone! Got it from montgomery mazda for $110ish and paid the mechanic $33 to put it in. Much better than $450. you're right, my boyfriend could probably have done it and/or showed me how to do it -- but he's a traveling musician and ALWAYS out of town. and honestly, I was feeling lazy and just didn't want to f with it. $33 didn't seem all that bad to me. ;)

When it was in the shop the first time for the O2, I asked them to take a look at the brakes (since it had 55k on it and the back brakes had never been replaced). They said they were fine, and even told me what percentage I had left on the front and back (I can't recall now what it was).

4 days later, the back brakes were clearly NOT okay and they were squealing like a banshee. Had them look at them a second time when it was back in to put the 02 on, and what do you know? back brakes are shot and need to be replaced. I gave them all kinds of hell for telling me they were fine and even going as far as to tell me what percentage I had left. They gave me some lame excuse about not looking closely with a flashlight..... why did he think that would excuse what they did?!?!

So I raised a fuss (something I have learned to be very good at after dealing with plumbers, contractors, electricians, and the like thinking I'm a "stupid girl" during the remodel of my house) and got the front and back brakes replaced for free.

I will never NEVER return to that place again!!

You all were SO helpful! Thanks again!!!! This forum is GREAT!

Where I can find the IIRC wiring directions? I searched on the forum and look through the how to section and couldnt find it.

I just installed an universal O2 sensor on my 01 protege ES, but I want to doble check with the wiring directions in the forum. The diagram that came with the sensor is misleading since the order and color the of the cables are in the wrong order from what it really is.
