Bad gas mileage

So I have only filled up my Protege5 twice since I got it. First fill up, i got 26 mpg and I thought that was pretty crappy for how easy I drive and how NOT powerful this engine is. I looked at the spark plugs and air filter and both needed replacing, so I replaced them. I also cleaned my MAF because I was having idling problems. Cleaning the MAF fixed the idling problem...or at least for the past 300 miles it has been fine. So the tank after cleaned MAF, new plugs, and new filter...I get 23 MPG! This was 50/50 highway/city driving. I drive really easily too, very conservative. Any ideas of why the bad gas mileage? I have new coil packs and plug wires in my garage waiting to go in...could these help my mileage? Btw, I have a stock auto P5 with 77k miles. Thanks.

when was the last time the computer was reset? disconnect the battery, then step on the brake pedal to fully drain all power. connect it all back up and let the computer relearn your driving style. you might get 1 or 2 more tanks of gas with low mileage, but after that it should adjust to your unique driving style and the mileage should increase if you do drive easy.

my wife gets 31 or 32 mpg when driving my protege5. i get around 27 mpg. (manual trans)

Check tire pressure too...
Weird thing is, I always check my tire pressure, and I changed out all plugs wires and coil packs recently. Still got like 22-23 mpg 90% city driving. Maybe my yokohama summer tire? But I've read that sticky tire shouldnt waste more than 2 mpg. So I should get 24, well maybe that's right then consider my driving style in city...

i drive primarily city.

its really like 70/30 city to highway, but that also depends if there is a car meet down in san diego or whatnot.

But remember, mods also play a role on this. a full exhaust system will mess up your AFR.

and what mpg do you get?

my P5 probably see over 300 per tank once, on a road trip to florida, averaged 29 mpg. I set the cruise on 80-85 tho, but it still seems low to me.

100% city miles, and if i dont granny i average 30's, if i granny like granny X33458390 then i'll get like 33-35 and its man tranny.

Damn guys, I bought this car for good MPG and its terrible. How can such a low horsepower 4-cylinder on a fairly light car get such bad gas mileage?

I get about 340 miles to a tank of gas. I drive pretty "normal" i do horse around from time to time but the gas mileage doesn't seem to change. Mine is a 5spd

try seafoam. i got back some MPG and some power..worth a try only 10 dollars a can. i think every car needs a good seafoam from time to time, alteast once a year or twice. ive meet people who have done it with every oil change, but its your choice

Is there a How-To thread on the seam foam someone can show me? And is it possible that changing out my coil packs and plug wires will give me better gas mileage?
