bad egr causing a bad cyl 4 misfire?

hey guys,

its been a while since my car has run well, but now its not drivable. it started out as a cyl 4 misfire CEL and a rough idle back about 4 months ago. i replaced the spark plugs, and it went away for about two months. when the cyl 4 misfire CEL came back, i swapped the coil packs and the CEL followed it to cyl 2. replaced bad coil and it was okay for a month. about a month ago, i had an overheat, but i noticed it immediately and pulled over, let it cool for quite some time then limped it about a mile back to my house. that turned out to be a bad thermostat. then the cyl 4 misfire code came back immediately after replacing the thermostat, and the car was missing hard. while on the highway, the CEL started flashing, so i limped it home and parked it. turned out that cyl 1 was missing as well, due to a bad plug. i replaced that as well as my plug wires, but the car still runs terrible, like cyl 4 is not firing at all. i swapped injectors 3 and 4 but the misfire stays on cyl 4. a compression check shows ~190 psi accross the board with no change over a 30 sec interval. so good spark, good fuel, good compression... bad emissions? tonight i took out the egr valve and checked the resistance valves as prescribed by the service manual. all were supposed to read 24 ohms... all read 0 ohms, so bad egr. also, cyl 4 has carbon buildup on the plug, but thats to be expected with the missing.

i guess the point of all of this is: would a bad egr valve really cause such a bad issue with just cyl 4? anyone have similar issues?

sorry about the long post. any input would be greatly appreciated.

Was your EGR valve all gummed up with carbon? If it was stuck open, it is theoretically possible that it would create a huge vacuum leak that might somehow only effect one or two cylinders and cause them to misfire. But that would more likely be a random misfire, so I dunno.
