2013 CX-5 Touring FWD
Hey guys, want to get some opinions for my next project. I'm driving from Atlanta to west Texas over Christmas break to visit some family and I have a 2 year old that needs to be entertained on the way there and back (around 22h one way). I have 3 options I'm debating: headrest dvd monitors, flip down dvd monitor, or get a tablet pc and a headrest mount for it. I don't have many dvd's for her and most videos are on my computer so any headrest/flipdown would need to play mp4/avi videos from a thumb drive or sd card as well as dvd's. I think I'm leaning towards the tablet option but am also debating a more permanent solution since I plan on having the car and the kid for several more years. I plan for her to use headphones (wireless or wired I don't care) so that I can still listen to the radio while I'm driving. Post up your opinions and I will do a write up with whatever I decide to do.

Haha! I hope u plan on having the kid for several more years!

Id get a nexus 7 tablet. I have one and for the price its great.

just got an nexus 7 too. going to check around to see best way to attach it to back of passanger headrest

We used something identical to this with our Galaxy 10.1 last year and it worked beautifully.

I'd recommend with the Nexus 7 go for the largest storage possible (I THINK the 32GB is out now), just by virtue of needing 44 hours of content (unless the family doesn't mind reruns). If you have an unlimited data plan with tethering, that might even be the ticket with Netflix and Hulu streaming.

Good luck - That's one hell of a haul with a two year old!

I am in the same boat.

Do you have a moonroof? If yes then flip down does not make sense. Also headrest/twin are easier if there are 2 kids or a kid with an adult. Both have their own choices. Kids usually watch the same over and over again which could be boring :(
I had included twin headrest but when I saw the specs I refused because it was 7 inches with a "not-so-impressive" resolution.

I have an IPAD3 and my idea is:
- To get a "Crash Tested" mount where I can slide in the ipad and remove it, much more convenient then constantly burning/buying DVDs and carrying them in the car.
- Since Ipad storage is less, I found out about seagate gofles satellite 500GB HD which can wirelessly stream to ipad and play all your movies, Actually my plan is to get one more tablet since this HDD can stream to 3 simultaneous devices while getting charged. I have bought the additional chargers since the only USB connector will be used to play my music. I prefer to use that instead of bluetooth because it drains the battery.
- Apart from the cables I ordered the FM rtansmitter so I can play audio through the speaker if need be.
- I increased my data plan so my wife can catch up on FB or my son can watch youtube if possible.

Problem is that the seagate HDD is 200GB and the crashtest I found was from a UK site. I could not find something from DX, ME or anything local. I am waiting for a good crash test mount and the HDD to get a bit cheaper so I can pull the trigger. There is aWD drive as well but its only 64 GB for ~ 90$.

Imagine 2 tablets that can be simultaneously used by kids or adults streaming from the 500 GB drive and the option to brows internet while driving. How cool.

I am waiting for people to critically evaluate and give suggestions if any.

That sounds like an impressive setup asrm, the only thing you should add is bluetooth headphones for each one. My wife vetoed the headrest idea, she doesn't want our daughter to get used to watching tv wherever we go so it looks like we will be going the tablet route for just this trip and not leaving anything in the car permanently.

Thanks!

VisionExpress has some really high rated 13$ wireless headrest but since it is battery based I am looking for the bluetooth ones...
During Black Friday I was able to get the Seagate Gofles satellite HD at 50% for just 99$ and am looking forward to set it up soon.

The crashtested mount from scosche is still at 150 but I am looking for a mount for another tablet instead of ipad so I can have it dedicated.

Will keep you guys posted on this setup.
