B&M thing

I use to race karts, so I'm pretty lucky my wife lets me buy the tools I need. If I don't have it, maintenance dept where I work surely has it, in 13 sizes and 4 colors...

For curiosity's sake, what does "Lol" mean? This is a new expression for me, up in The Great White North.

know what you mean....I am a machanic by trade....not an auto mechanic....and have plenty of tools...HOWEVER....I am a supervisor in a maintenance shop at an electrical power plant...work in the machine shop....if we don't have the tool...its probably not made...not to mention if for any reason I need a lathe or milling machine....I just hop in the car and go into work...can pretty much do whatever I need to do....its pretty handy.

Some have reported a problem with the new shifter conflicting with the exhaust heat shield directly below the shifter. (The short shifter is actually longer in this area than the old one was).

Mine looked like it was going to be close, and rather than removing the heat shield and bending it as the installation instructions recommended, I just put a wooden dowel down the hole while the shifter was out, and rapped it with a hammer a couple of times. I lowered the heat shield about 1/4 inch this way, and have not had an interference problem.

Kind of a "ham fisted" way to go about it, but it took all of 10 seconds to do, and moved the shield just enough, and in just the right place.

there is no SOME to it...if you have a protege and still have the stock exhaust with the heat shield there...the shifter WILL hit it...and the instrucitons tell you about "DIMPLING" the heat shield....but the way that Don went about it works like a champ...and actually will save you some time....

I didn't have to worry about it for at the same time I installed my bosal exhaust system and removed the heat shield all together...seeing as how there is no resonator there to get all warm and toasty....the heat sheild was unnecessary.

YES....make sure you have snap ring pliers to do the job...it will make it LOTS easier....

put LOTS of lube on the new shifter orings when installing it...ENSURE you get it in far enough for the ORIGINAL o-ring to be reinstalled on top and the snap ring...IF you can not reinstall both peices...its NOT bottomed out....pull it back out and put it back in...make sure its right.....

do you KNOW how to get the console out? you will need to ya know....

Hi Sir Nuke, what's the best way to get the shifter all the way in again. I can't seem to get enough leverage to get it all the way in. Now I'm just driving around without the O-ring and snap ring.

Sucker's hard to drop in, eH? I actually used a block of 2x4 and a hammer.it's best if you've got a friend to hold it from underneath while you push, or vice versa, (I had 2 friends and I rotating) Mostly I'd just make sure to really lube it up.
