I have filled in new greese, changed the boot.

Should I just hammer the rod into the area that has bearings?
any suggestions would help.

A dead blow mallet would be a better choice, but if you must use a hammer, be gentle. It doesn't take much to compress the snap ring.

Looking at your picture, you need to add a lot more grease. Coat the bearings and all races. Then toss a handful into the boot.
