Ok i saw a post about this a while ago and did a search and didn't find a damn thing. What do u guys think about an awd monster protege. I mean the thing could do some damnage if set up correctly! What do u think it would take to make an MP3 awd i am talkin' costs, time, labor i wanna know all the juicy details. Tell me what u guys think. This is just all a fat idea. Just curiousity and interest are peaking my mind.
Peace,
Zane

I have also entertained this idea. I have not researched it but think it would be cool to have an awd turbo mp3 WRX killer. I know the jspec has the awd tranny and I spoke to someone at corksport that said they could get the tranny for like 800 dollars from japan but were unaware of what was involved in a conversion. There may be some fitment issues because of the right to left hand drive conversion.
Maybe you can research it more or call corksport and see what new info they have on it now.:D :D

if you really want to do this better start saving them bones now...any time you do major tranny work such as this you're looking at a lot of money...a company did this with a celica...turning it into a awd racer...the costs for the entire project build up reached over 100k...but for the conversion to awd cost around 20k because of all the work and adjustments that had to be made...but oh to have awd...

Lets see......awd.....its avaible in Japan............not here...
but guess what I heard from my dealer........
They said they will have the AWD P5 next summer........
They are the biggest Canada Mazda Dealer.....so they get all the info from Mazda Corp.
I hope its true.....but than again I hope its not coz if it does come out.......I will cry.....

that would be sweet if mazda released an awd P5...which seems like a big possibility since most of the automakers seem to be making the switch (toyota matrix, pontiac vibe, and of course suburu which started the awd market)...but i also wonder if by the time that they release that will it be made by ford....duh duh duuhhhhhhh (scary overtone)

the real problem with the p5/protege conv. to AWD is the rear sub-frame and floor pan clearance. we don't have the clearance for a rear drive shaft under the floor pans and the rear sub-frame is totally different. besides the fact that the awd tranny will not mout to the tranny mounts we currently have from what i understand.

Yeah

From what i understand i would have to do a whole new chasis/frame. It would be nice to have a water molded one made from like aluminum or maybe even titanium. This would be a copy from the 323 gtx/626 awd model and then do some changes to make it fit the protege. I also understand the trans does not properly fit the 2.0 fs engine block. So there goes that engine. So duratech maybe. But that ford name plagues me. Ummm any idea on that? I have a s*** load of money. All my life since i was lil i wanted a supra and saved since around age 10 which was '94-'95 time and thats when the supra was huge. I had enough to get a supra and do some mad s*** to it and i planned to but my parents were like save ur money (mostly the idea of they didn't want me to have a high horse car that i would kill myself in) and the bought me a MP3. I was all good with that i pay them for it. So i got a crap load of beans it just what i wanna do, so throw some ideas out i am willing and am always open ears. Spoolin thanks for the info on corksport i am gunna check that out. One more idea is have a six speed.
I'm out
Peace,
Zane

there's one guy on here, can't remember his screen name, thats doing a duratech swap into the stock chassis. do a search with "duratech" as the subject and you should find the thread. He claims that the 2.5 will bolt in with minimal mods.

By the time you have the scratch ready for this, the Evo VII or Suby STi version will probably be out as well. Or an Audi with a Quattro system or the all wheel drive BMW 325. For the amount of money you would spend to convert the Protege you could easily be into one of these cars that have better power and far better than average handling. Along with very good build quality and reliability.

i think everybody is just dreamin at the thought of having an awd p5...which would be nice...having a fully customized car couldn't be that bad...lol

The AWD tranny comes mated to the FS-ZE engine. Since the FS-ZE will bolt into our cars, the AWD tranny should too. From what I understand from talking to Corksport the AWD tranny will bolt up. Other than that I dunno what you would need for the conversion.

Okay I know this. 91 to 96 escort gt had an awd mate called the ford laser tx3 which was AWD based off the 323 gtx/gtr. We did build an AWD escort with the tranny from the 323 and rear axle. But we had to get the from the trans to the rear axle from aussie land which was not bad. Everything fit well and we did it for 1500 US dollars. To bad rallying in vermont we rolled it 8 times. It did 12.2 in the 1/4 mile.

I think everything will fit fine. The FWD and AWD are made on the same assembly line. Remeber car companies want a profit not a loss.
