Average build price?

my block is at a machine shop now. youre just going to have to call around for prices but.. so far everyone is close. 900 for rods and pistons. another 250-350 for bearings, seals, headstuds, gaskets and whatnot..

the block work is as follows
40$ block boil
30$ block head mill
40$ bore hone
90$ crank grind
150$ ass'y lower end
120$ alignment/balancing
100$ top end ass'y
180$ port and polish
100$ 3deg. valve angle job

these are close estimates and ive called probably 15 machine shops and this seemed to be most reliable shop at the best price.
of course your going to be able to cut corners/beef up some stuff you think you may need.. but.. total im about 5-6g into my build and the last piece to my puzzle is the standalone.. still havent bought it yet.

s*** adds up pretty fast :P

I'm not having the engine blueprinted and balanced... Not going to happen.

definitely not for everyone. ive had a dream since i was a little boy to take just an average car and turn it into something special. my new goal is to beat my boss and his z06 for under the price he got it for. $12,500.

What are your plans for the transmission?

Beat in what? That must have been one destroyed Z06 for $12,500, I would guess a salvage title. You do realize that a stock Z06 of any year runs a faster 1/4 mile than the fastest ET listed on this site for an MSP?

There might be a few MSPs that have been able to walk one on a highway, but those don't last long before something breaks.

Now if you road race, you can beat a Z06 on most tracks with just race compound tires with stock horsepower. But of course, then he buys race compound tires and you are back to square one.

I totally understand the desire to have something unique and special, but you will spend every bit of $12,500 trying to get Z06 performance from a Protege. And when you are out of money or patience (because you will never be done), you will still be left with a Protege that is actually worth less than when you started. When the Z06 owner decides he has had enough of the crap interior and build quality of the Vette, he can just sell it and he won't lose a dime.

Actually there's someone with a p5 that outran his boss's z06... It doesn't take as much as you would think

z06 in good condition, its a 2002 and guy was down on his luck in the market slump 2-3 years ago.. im not a coupe person and the custom is what i go for.. even if i get a bmw m3 with 350hp then ill still want to do s*** to it.. the money is more worthwhile in a car that has potential, not something already done up. doing anything to the m3 or corvette isnt worthwhile imo. i get everything they have plus the mods i want in a car i prefer

I've estimated my cost of about $1,500. Approximately $850 for rods/pistons, $250 for gaskets, $150 for machining, and the rest would be miscellaneous odds and ends...

BTW I blew my replacement motor. spiked to 17psi.

If you want a shade-tree engine build that's fine, but I've put enough into my car that I'm not going to start cutting corners when it comes to building the motor, but maybe that's just me.

honestly when i did mine it was around 4-5k doing things proper. that's including doing things like a exedy stage 2 & fidanza flywheel. When i do my next motor it will probably be a little more.

Honestly its all in the Machine shop. Use a great shop and you wont have a issue. My work was around 400-500$ worth of machine work.

what you need is Forged Pistons, Forged Rods, 3 angle valve job. Have the shop install the pistons, rods, and crank and just double check the torque specs (WITH ARP STUDS AND BOLTS!!!! THIS IS IMPORTANT! THAT INCLUDES HEAD STUDS) and install following the Engine Build Manual. It is quite easy this way and if followed you get a great build for a average price. People who spend more than 8k on a motor build are STUPID unless you are going for HUGE power which is useless for a FWD car. all you need is around 300. (im aiming for 350-400 haha) But back to the point. there is no point in huge headwork, getting stuff acid dipped, ect. unless you are going for massive power and with these cars you still dont need headwork to get 300's. Cams are one thing which I do not include in headwork cause to me that is different power adder than port and polish stuff. Some flow is a MUST have like a intake mani's guts taken out.

Im bored with typeing now so I will stop. And I see many typo's but I could care less I wake up in like 5 hours so bed time! LOL!

12.5k isnt my budget for the build.. its total car + build compared to just buying another stock car with higher horsepower.

U gotta spend money on stage3+ clutch and lightweight flywheel, 2g for rods and pistons,1g for turbo, exhaust manifold, injectors, fuel rail, intake manifold, better exhaust system, oil pressure and fuel pressure regulator easy 8g atleast

I'm replacing the "weak" points in the engine. I don't know what would be considered "shade-tree" about that. I'm not "building" this to put down 300whp on a daily driver to make it reliable, I'm just tired of holes in the side of my blocks. And another thing to think about is the fact that I do all the work myself in my shop with the exception of machining, so what would be considered 30+hr. of labor at $95/hr is all done for "free" because I'm doing it myself.

Then I'd say just replace the rods. Especially since your doing the work yourself. You could have it done for under $750 easy, including fluids, harware, and bearings.
