Automatic Climate Control System - Dumb question

Hey guys, saw this on another forum and now I'm curious. A 2014 M6 owner with auto climate control reported that driving home one chilly night he had temp set at 75 and the following day when driving in the sun, he changed temp down to 70 with auto climate control off, but the fan kept blowing warm air (was not making the temp adjustment). He had to reengage the auto climate control button, change the temp (with auto climate on) and then turn it off again (he preferred the auto system off). Is this correct? I re-read the climate control section of the manual but it's unclear on this point. Why wouldn't you be able to adjust the interior temp using the dial with the auto climate control system off? That just seems plain 'ol silly if that's the way this HVAC system is really designed? Can anyone verify this? I'll try this on my way home tonight myself.

(I myself like the system off but am starting to think I had it on with the indicator light out as I have not had any difficulty in adjusting the interior temps of the car using the temp dial - also seems dumb to me that the auto climate control light goes out anytime you adjust fan speed or other settings, even though the auto system is still essentially on, like a semi-automatic mode). Also kind of frustrating is anytime I turn on the defrost I have to readjust fan speed down to my liking, as it always defaults to full blast mode).

Sometimes it seems to me like there is too much half baked tech at work here (this isn't isolated to Mazda obviously)! Call me old school, lol! Just give me a temp dial that works regardless!

UPDATE: On the way home tonight I tried adjusting the temp with auto climate control on or off and it didn't seem to matter, adjusting the temp worked fine in either scenario. Maybe the other guy had a bad HVAC unit or something?

If it auto mode its going to do whatever it takes to get the vehicle to the desired temperature

That's not my question however. It's essentially, does the temp control rotary knob work with the auto climate system off? This other guy seems to think not. Rampage

No, it doesn't. The auto mode light goes off, but the rest of the auto functions are still active. That part IS in the manual (sort of like a semi-auto mode). To fully cancel auto mode you have to hit the "off" button on the middle dial, and when I do, my temp control dial still functions, so we seem to be good here in either scenario.
