I bought a Mazda6 knob on Ebay last week. I can confirm now that it does indeed fit perfectly on the Protege shifter. Looks/feels great too! 
fellas, dont dismiss the fact that the TWM shift knobs are also counter-weight, meaning they were made heavier than most of the shiftknobs out there. This allows for less hand force to be applied to the shifter during switching the gears. I got the original (classic) TWM shift knob and comparing to the stock plastic knob, its much easier to shift with.

since your on the topic of shift knobs, is it true that the RX-8 came with a lit up knob? and if so it would fit on my 99 protege?

I also have a Mazda3/6 shift knob and it fit fine on both my stock shifter and my Kartboy. I need to polish the gear sequence though, part of my silver paint is worn off and it looks kinda bad.

Hehe, right when I took mine out of the box, I cleaned/conditioned the leather, and polished/waxed the metal.

I like it though..But I did have to make a spacer to get the shift boot to meet up with the knob so it looked more factory...I hate a loose shift boot!
But the TWM Rocks....Its just pricy at a large bill for it.
about an hour ago i installed the msp03.5 shiftknob + boot on the b&m short shifter... an interesting installation....
there's a small ring that comes with the b&m shifter which is there to hold the oem boot in place...i had to remove the ring because the msp shiftknob goes down the rod much more than the normal shiftknob...i wrapped the new boot over the rod and pushed it down as far as possible, just enough to make the msp shift knob screw down far enough to get stiff enough...
what actually sucks about the msp shift knob is that the leather ring is becoming lose, i might have to use some glue on it :\
