Anyone want to make a Diagnosis?

I recently aquired an 03 protege5 with around 68,000 miles on it. Today i was driving from Gainsville to Orlando and noticed a slight blip or flat spot around 3100 rpms. I didnt think much of it until i got on the highway, cruising in 5th i felt a shudder around 3100 again. It ran fine above there and from first to fourth through the rpm range. About 20 miles down the road CEL flashes on and engine completely dies. When i pulled over i saw a dime sized hole in the valve cover just above the timing belt. There are some abrasions on the timing belt and the indside of the cover just around the hole. Anyone have a guess? All proper maintenance has been taken care of.

jumped timing..my guess.. i had a belt jump that bad, and it busted the cover, and the car didt run after that.. it also knock the cam sensor lose on mine..
