8h00-Well, I woked up this morning and what did I see!!! SNOW Of course White F***ing SNOW. By Chance my P5 was still in the garage.

10h00-Now has come the time to put on my new Winter Tires.

10h30-Now for the first run in the White S**T.

10h35-Man The's tires run great !!!

10h37-Time to break!!!

10h38-:wtf:

10h39-Pissed off at the guy that decided to make ABS Standard on canadian models.

10h40-I have taken the main ABS fuse out.

10h45-Second run of the day, I start up the car. I was expecting that the ABS light would stay ON, but not the Hand Brake one too.

10h50-Just having some fun with mother nature Without ABS.

Now I was wondering if anyone on this forum or others have done the same thing but without the lights going ON.
I would like to pass a safe(FUN) winter and the ABS takes that away from me :'(

So your saying that by removing the abs fuse you disabled the abs?? I read last year that more was needed to disable it on this very board. I also have to agree with you that the abs is dangerous.

to truley remove ABS ...

this would be more hassle then what its worth trust me .. since the only diferance between ABS and non abs is some additional sensors and when you take off the front wheels and the break caliper and disk you will see the front CV axle which it will have on the spline housing going (side going to the wheel) it will have a ring on it looks like a big gear with teeth ..that is the only thing that is differant .. if that is removed with it only takes about 5 mins and using a rubber mallat with maybe a block of wood you could pop it right off .. i deffinatly reccomend not doing so but if you are that intrested in doing so .. that is what you would need to do :O)

I've got to find a way as well to disable that ABS.
A bit off topic, but I'm looking to put a14" steelies on and I spoke w/ someone from Mazda Canada and they said that the 14" were too small and that the rotors would rub. The dealers are only putting on 15". I found it kinda weird since they have a fitment chart in the manual for 14".
My guess is that they can make more $ off the 15's than the 14's. Anyone here had any problems w/ 14's?

Any help would be appreciated.

Defeating ABS

While I still don't see the need to do so or the wisdom of it, if you really want to defeat the ABS, pulling the fuse should do so. You can always put a piece of black electrical tape over the idiot light! Hee Hee.
Just remember, if you are thinking of permanently removing the ABS system and it was standard equipment on the car, you could be legaly responsible after you dispose of the car and someone has a problem with it. Jim

Just to disspell some of the stuff I read on this post...if you take the ABS wheel speed sensor of or damage it, it will cause the ABS ligt to activate and defeate the ABS untill you replace the sensor...taking the fuse out has the same effect, its just a lot smarter than beating up on the sensor. To completely remove the ABS and revert to non-ABS you need a non-abs master cylinder, porportioning vavle, brake actuator rod, and booster. Its a real pain, but can be done...used to do it on early 90's Dodge minivan's with the TEVES brake systems.

Could someone please enlighten a few of us as to why ABS might be dangerous on snow? It seems like if it were *really* that bad, the car makers would not put them on cars. Not speaking for the foreign car market, but here in the US, well, Detroit is one of those weird cities in the US where the municipality does NOT plow local streets. It seems like the car makers would know better about driving/braking on snow.

Thank you for asking!

I sure don't understand why ABS is so bad, especially with EBD involved. Jim

It's not bad... It's just sometimes it will go off for no reason needlessly increasing your braking distance and sometimes causing some close calls. As an example, I do down a hill in the mornin to get to work. Right at the bottom is a stop sign, and even if I'm not slipping, the ABS goes off. A couple of times it was so bad that my car actually went right into the middle of the intersection before I stopped. Thankfully never when any traffic was going by. I've never had problems driving in the winter before with none ABS cars, and I drove like 40 Km a day during the ice storm of 98. It just seems that with ABS, your never 100% sure of where your going to stop. Kinda like ice itself. I don't believe ABS was meant for icy conditions. It was just put onto cars so that in an emergency you can slam on your brakes (As most people in a panic will do) and still have control. It has nothing to do with winter driving.

Thanks for the clarification. We're supposed to have mixed rain and snow this evening and I was about to get worried.

Of course that makes perfect sense, because once the ABS goes off, you aren't slipping.

err... I mean... the ABS turns off when you're not slipping...

err... I mean... you would never know if you were slipping because the ABS goes off...

er....

Just playing. I know what you meant, thanks. :D

Holey Crud. We're getting pounded this morning in the NorthEast and this morning during my commute I found out exactly what you mean. Some dork three cars in front of me lost a little traction going up hill and gave it more gas.

Needless to say the ABS kicked in and I think I even picked up speed going up hill! Fortunately, I was only in 2nd gear and new enough to keep the RPMs up pretty high. Thank god for engine brakeing.
