anyone know anything about old Corollas?

so i'm looking into picking up an '87 Corolla FX-16 for use as an autoX car/dog hauler. the good: the guy is asking $200, curb weight of 2140,1.6L 16-valve, 7500rpm 4A-GE engine.

the bad is that aftermarket parts are tough to come by, and that the Club4AG and FX (AE82) forums are the slowest things i've ever seen. everyone is primarily interested in engine swaps and side skirts; not a lot of "grip and handling" people there.

my question relates to the interchangeability of the FX and '88+ corolla GT-S (the AE92) suspension parts. JIC sells the FLTA2 (7kg-f/5kg-r) for the GT-S, and i know at least one GT-S owner has used Koni inserts in AE82 strut bodies on his GT-S.

my only other option is GCs with stock-bodied Koni inserts. apparently non-rebuildable Koni inserts that top out with ~350 lb/in springs...not good enough if i'm going to try beating civics.
