Anyone had their Engine replaced yet? Poll

Looking to see if any other Protege 5 members have had their engine replaced yet (stock of course)?

Does anyone know if Mazda has discovered a problem with 2003 Protege 5's?

My car only has 15,000km's on it and currently running a second engine. Now that the new engine is in the same symptoms are appearing again! I am interested in knowing if anyone else has come across the same misfortune in quality?

Engine Replacement Symptoms

It started at around 8000 kms where in first and second gears (engine cold) if you held the shift into the next gear at 3000rpm for 10 seconds or so the engine would make this "electrical griding noise". It kind of sounded like an exhaust shield was loose? A little bit of a knocking sound....

Anyway as I kept driving it more and more the sound became more pronounced and happend everytime I did this. It wasn't my intention to hold the car in 1st and 2nd gears at 300rpm but sometimes when your in traffic you can't shift up and you tend to hold the car where it is....

So Mazda Canada determined that the engine short block needed to be replaced. Funny though as just two days ago the engine started to do the same noises again......That's why I'm looking to see if anyone else is having problems as this may be a defect!

One engine replacement is sort of bad on a new car......but two would be absoultely %!@*ed!

Maybe it's your tranny that is causing the problem..

Had mine rebuilt already, all gears were replaced because ofa broken reverse fork.

Check the lemon laws in your province.

This must be brought to Mazda's attention

I have had the same problem, only mine just made it out of warranty. Now I have a car that needs a complete new engine and still making payments. My noise started like only at start up in the cold. Then it progressivly got worse so that when you were driving just maintaining speed there was a constant rattle sounded like bad spark knock. Suddenly one day my car grinded to a halt literally!

What did it cost you to have your transmission rebuilt? I have a feeling that mine may not be lasting me too much longer. I may be going to hiboost before long, so I was just wondering. Anyone know of any aftermarket trannies?

I have a 2002 that's had the engine replaced under warranty. I had and Injen intake and a Mazdaspeed muffler, but my dealer was cool about it.

At about 15K miles, I noticed a slight knocking noise at start-up, so I mentioned it to the dealer when I went in for service(thank God).
At about 30K, after a night of Hwy 9 fun, the same noise reappeared, but much louder accompanied by black smoke out of the exhaust!! I limped it home and took it to the dealer. It turned out that my #4 rod bearing took a s***. I'm now at about 34K and my new engine is problem-free!

I had my shortblock replaced at 30K miles. Had a bad rod bearing. Seems like it still makes the noise, and I've brought it back a bunch of times and the dealer said it was OK.

Sounds like the same problem you have. Do you let the car warm up or just start up and take off?

Yep, knocking relative to RPM is most likely a rod bearing (don't ask how I know).

Have you ran the car low on oil or skimped on the oil changes by any chance?

there was a thread somewhere about this -- my car has done it since new --
but its only when the car is cold and at around 2800 - 3000 rpms ---
i dont think its a problem -- if i have time ill look for the thread unless someone else has it

Yes, there is the TSB for engine noise caused by VTCS when the engine temp is below 149 degrees.

this is probly it -- sounds like it for me, it says that it should not harm the engine so im not worried -- good luck if thats not it
