I'd get a short lense before a long one... without my 18-55 my 50mm would cripple the crap out of me... and even with the 18-55 my buddy couldn't take good shots of the progress on his house.

correct me if I'm wrong but the 70-300 is a cheapo lens... isn't the 75-300 MUCH better? or have I got this backwards?

the 70-300 replaced the 75-300. It's midrange. Costs about 600-700 bux new. Comes with IS and has a quieter focusing motor and faster than the 75-300.

70-300 came with my kit and its a crap lens. I still recommend the 55-250 IS that I got. Sleeper3 seemed happy with it and for the money it really can't be beat. For slightly extra, though, you might want to pony up for some L-glass...

That said, I need to get a better short lens too. 18-55 is good for that mid-range stuff, but a 10-22 would be clutch!

I guess I'll never be a true photo nut, because theres just no way in hell I can justify spending the kind of money you guys talk about on lenses. I'll pick up a reasonably priced tele at some point, and I think I'd like another prime.. but no way will my total investment in photo s*** exceed $1500.. TOTAL.

I thought that the 70-300IS was better than the 55-250 because it has the USM and slightly better glass? I dunno though. I do like my 55-250 fo sho. I would LOVE to be able to go out to 300mm though.

For sure, but it's hard to not buy toys LOL. Another prime that might be good for you is the 85mm 1.8 or a 35mm 1.8. Other than that, you're probably looking at a huge price jump if you do go to faster primes. HUGE price jumps.

Oh btw guys..a very good walk around lens is the 17-85 IS from Canon. It's 4-5.6 but it's got IS, and the range it covers is very good for carrying around on your camera. The optics are pretty good as well.

I think there's also a 100mm that is a possibility.. my buddy also has a 60mm macro that I wanna play with. I think if I got the 35mm I'd dump the nifty fifty and get the 85mm as well...

If you want a macro, don't get the 60mm. Read the reviews on it and you'll see some of the negative comments about having to be close to the subject, causing a shadow unless you use a ring flash.

Definitely not man. Your exposure is good, white balance is good and focus is good. That's really the hardest part. I like the first picture you took most (engine cover). Keep at it, take inspiration from other's styles and you'll be good to go.
