Any photographers in here?

cool shots

here is another I took yesterday:

Love this shot. Do you shoot in RAW? I think it would be better if you toned down the exposure a ton and silhouetted the 737 and kept the sky from getting washed out...
55-250mm IS

you gotta get that lens.
It's definitely my "go-to" lens for about everything! haha

of course I shoot in raw!

I actually tried the sillouette thing, and then just clicked on shadow compression to bring out a little detail in the plane because it looked kind of boring. I recovered as much detail as I could from the sky, but unfortunately, my "expose to the right" mantra got the best of me. I think my ECV was +1.66 on that shot. I'm loving the vapor trails though.

its that good? crap... looks like I might just flip that 100-300 sigma sooner than I thought.

hmm... for the sake of flexability, I'll probably try to avoid that them. I'll do a few test shots with that setup just to see what it does.

read up on it. It's pretty doggone good.

Oh yeah, the vapor is what "makes" that shot... Would be great if you could nail it again, but with the sky in its full fury

you should have seen the fury! about 5deg north of that heading was BLACK with storm clouds. it was crazy looking.

I spent probably half an hour reading "budget telephoto" threads on POTN... and basically everything pointed to that lens. I guess I shouldn't be so surprised, but I still am.. lol

The stuff I'm trading for the sigma (total cost will be under $80) should be here soon. so hopefully I can turn around that lens for some cash and just go to the 55-250. lol

flyin, I don't know if you saw these, so I will repost the midget versions:

I took those pretty much JUST for the sky.

Very nice. I did see them. I'd adjust the crop a bit, especially on the DL 757 (get in a lot tighter). You're a lot better at helo shots than I am. I need to work on that!

I think starting out with budget lenses is not all that bad. having the 18-55, 55-250, and 50 f/1.8 is a nicely rounded starting point I think... After you've got those, you can keep yourself entertained until you can afford better stuff... and all together, they can be had for under $500, for sure. Plus, shooting lots of different things allows you to figure out what you enjoy/do the most. I thought for the longest time that I would get the 70-200 f2.8 next, but I think I'm going to get the 17-55f2.8 instead. I use that focal length range WAY more than anything else, and I'm pretty happy with my 55-250 anyway.

in what way do you mean? (the heli comment)

also, I was trying to keep them as not cropped as possible, since they were at ISO3200...

I should have em all for about $400.. if I was going to put more money into glass after that I think it'd be a 10-22 or something else in that range. My coworker also has a 60mm macro that looks like it would be a LOT of fun to shoot. He's got a pic of a lighthouse that looks like its about 500' tall, really neat. I think I'm a LONG way from upgrading the quality of my glass. Way too much to learn. lol

don't get a macro lens, just get extension tubes.

or a reversing ring... I took these with the 18-55mm kit lens -

holy ISO batman... Not sure if I would have shot that high, but gone for the motion blur instead.

I just can't get good rotor blur on helos without the chopper bluring too. You posted a MD500 chopper pic before that was excellent as well. You have a knack for them, for sure!

Two from last night's snowfall:

1/250 is the magic number. I can get a tack sharp image at that speed, and it's slow enough for rotor blur. Figure out what your f-stop and ISO need to be at for that shutter speed and click away.
