Any advice?

I've never really sold a car before, so I thought I'd post here and see if anyone has some advice.

I have no idea how much to ask for the car. Mazda offered me $3,000 in trade, and I thought that was way too low.

1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS-T. 138,000 miles. New clutch, transmission, timing belt, and water pump all within the last 20,000 miles. Car runs like an absolute champ.

Only major problem is that the A/C compressor is shot and the car does not blow any cold air at all.

I'm also going to leave a pretty nice stereo system in the car, complete with in-dash CD as well as 10-disc in the trunk. Infinity Kappa separates in the front and rear and a 12" Infinity sub. Everything is properly wired and the system sounds fantastic. I figure it's easier to just leave it in the car rather than try and tear it out and get the factory system working again.

Anyway, the rims and tires are all in fantastic shape.

How much should I ask? Where should I advertise? The local newspaper is fairly expensive and ebay is not an option for me. autotraderonline.com is $70 for a good-looking ad. Anything free?

Also, I've taken a bunch of pics if you care to check them out.

Thanks for any help any of you might have. I absolutely love my Protege and this forum here is just an extension of my car. Everyone here is so friendly and willing to help.

Have you gotten an estimate on the air compressor? When my fianc's went out on her GTI it was a $1,200 repair (cheapest estimate), so we took what the dealer was offering.

If you factor that in, $5,200 doesn't sound bad at all for an 8 year old Eclipse with almost 140,000 miles. I'd take out the stereo stuff though, the dealer's not going to lower their price by much if any for that, and you could probably sell them here or on Ebay and make a bit more money back.

my friend Mike just bought a GST with a massive dent, 120000 miles and a bad MAF sensor for $7000. You would be surprised what people get for these cars and what the resale is.

That's the part that scared me into NOT taking the dealer's $3000 for the car. I know I can get more than that.

I think I'm just going to bite the bullet and put an ad on autotrader.com for $70. They seem to have the largest audience and I'm fairly sure that includes a free ad in the local weekly autotrader paper edition.

Thanks as always for the advice.

It's going to kill me to give up the 210hp, but I am tired of sinking money into the car and I'm happier than I ever imagined with my Protege.:)

sign up for ebaymotors, place a nice listing with pictures, starting bid of $0.01 BUT set a reserve price of what you really want for the car. Example - it will say that your car is up for bid starting at a mere penny, but your reserve price (which the bidders cannot see) won't allow the auction to complete successfully unless someone meets or beats that price.

Strip all the aftermarket stuff if you are going to trade it in. They are likely to be giving you nothing for the car because they are taking the value out of the markup on the new car. They really don't care what is in it, because dealers don't really consider those kind of things to increase value.

I traded my 99 Dakota R/T in on my MSP, it had CAI, ported/polished MP heads, P&P intake, TB, Headers... Guess what, they gave me the same exact price for it that the would have given for a stock one.

Four days after I traded it in, one of the salesmaen was taking it to get lunch and blew the motor manual shifting it. $3600 for a new motor from Dodge. HAHA!
