Another Performance Exhaust Question

Should I spend the money for a new exhaust and high flow cat?

I have a great exhaust and muffler shop down the street from where I live. I have used it for the last two Miata's I've had. When I upgraded the exhaust and installed a high flow cat, it yielded more power, response, and better gas mileage. It only cost me $250 for the cat, exhaust, and tips. I made that back in the fuel I saved.

I am wondering if it would have the same effect on the CX-9 engine. I would like to do it -if I know it will increase response and save on MPG's. Based on searches on this forum, I have not found much definitive answer to this question.

Does anyone have real-world experience with new exhaust systems or high-flow cat installation? How about how this engine platform would respond to this modification? It would help me make an informed decision.

Update: the exhuast shop gave me a quote of $300 which includes catback exhaust. The owner said the the cat that is in there already flows well, and they are known to be reliable. He would be replacing the dual exhaust pipes with a larger diameter set up. Anyone want to comment more specifically on why or why not this would be a good idea?

IMO without being paired to a higher flow intake that lets air flow in more I don't think you'll see much difference.

I have a 2007 3.5L and I had my local muffler shop remove the center resonator and in place put in a Magnaflow muffler. I also had them remove both rear OEM mufflers and in place put a straight pipe with the OEM square chrome tips in place to keep the stock look. I left the entire diameter of the piping in its stock OEM size. I have had it like this for about 4 years now and I did notice a gain in performance not to mention that it sounds awesome....very European and Infiniti like tone. I didn't see any MPG gains but I didn't do it for that purpose either. No check engine lights thus so far (knock on wood).

How do I do that? Sorry I'm not a whiz at that stuff...

If you take a video with your phone, you can either upload it to youtube or photobucket. Then you just past the link here from that hosting site.

Okay here is the link to my sound clip for my 2007 CX-9 3.5L with removed center resonator and in its place a Magnaflow universal muffler and deleted both rear OEM mufflers and in its place straight pipes. Sorry abou the quality of video but the sound sounds perfect and dead on. Enjoy!

Nice work getting the video up!

Does sound similar to the Moreno / Infinity type.

Thank you.

Interesting point on the center resonator, the shop I used said they would take it out as well. They would run new 3" from cat to the tips, with magnaflow muffler, and reuse the tips.
