Ford is recalling 7,600 new Escapes to fix coolant leaks that can cause engines to overheat or catch fire.

The recall affects 2013 models with 1.6-liter four-cylinder engines.

Plugs in the engine may not have been installed properly and can fall out while the motor is running. Coolant can leak and cause engines to overheat.

Dealers have repair parts available and owners should make service appointments as soon as possible, said Ford spokeswoman Marcey Zwiebel. Ford will fix the problem for free.

It's the third recall in less than two months for the completely redesigned SUV, which also has had problems with fuel lines and carpet padding. In July, the company recalled 11,500 Escapes to fix lines that can crack, leak and cause fires. That same month, Ford said it would recall more than 10,000 of the vehicles to fix carpet padding that can interfere with braking.

Yes the Escape has had plenty of recalls, this was posted before. When it comes to safety-related issues, automakers have learned to move quickly on recalls.

I guess my point was one of the cx5s biggest competitors continues to have initial quality issues and I wonder what it means for long term reliability.

Yes, another recent release of a all-new SUV from Ford was the 2011 Explorer, and that was was below average in terms of reliability (not good). That gives me greater concern than recalls.
I have a Lexus that's been through 3 or 4 significant recalls, reliability has been way above average.

Sure it might be considered early to predict long-term reliability of the 2 specific models (CX-5 and Escape), but the reliabity differences of the 2 brands (Mazda and Ford) over last 5 years or so is well-documented.

Ford has beat Mazda on the dependability studies, according to JD Power. With that said, all manufacturers have models that have more or less issues than others.

Ford got bit in the ass by pushing stuff to market too quick, but a lot of their negative marks in surveys have been for dissatisfiers, not reliability issues. The good news for the average consumer is that the industry average has been trending towards lower PP100 numbers over the last 20 years.

Mazda has beat Ford on reliability surveys done by Consumers Reports in recent years, although they make no predictions about new models without specific model historical data.

That's good to hear. They used to give people like Toyota good predictions for new models and I think that burned them around 2008-9.

Ford's 2013 Escape may be its most unfortunate unit since the Edsel. It is being recalled for the fourth time since its introduction four months ago. Some Ford Fusion sedans are also involved in the campaign.
