I believe there are Lotus Elise in the States but they are rare! Only a handful of people have them...obviously watered down to meet US specs. There is a guy in Virginia that has a 340R: http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/167337

I think it was road and track where I read something like: When they first talked about releasing the car in the states they wanted to use Honda Vtec but it didn't go through. Then they turned to Toyota and they rejected the offer and finally gave in. Toyota also threw in a 6 speed transmission as part of the "deal." The goal was making the car as light as possible. The handling hasn't changed one bit. R&T calls it the best handling sports car in the world.
