Amp and Sub combination

Hi there

just got a quick question... which is better to do

get a 300 watt rms amp to power a 200 watt rms sub

OR

200 watt rms to power a 300 watt rms sub

thanks, just wanted to see which would be better, coz i cant seem to find a sub thats 300 watts and an amp that has 300 watts as well

thanks

get the 300 watt amp and 200 watt sub because if you go vise versa. your sub will not be able to put out near as much boom and maybe distort easily.

hmm confusing

you can either get a 300 watt sub with a 200 watt amp, or a 200 watt sub with a 300 watt amp, if so why can you get the 300 watt sub with the 300 watt amp, the options are there?

idealisticly you would like to have more watts than the power coming from the subs so that you can push you subs to their maximum abilities without blowing them

Most subwoofers are blown because of clipping. Clipping occurs when you push an amplifier beyond it's capabilities and it 'clips' the top and bottom of the sound wave (producing a square wave instead of a sine wave for example). This type of signal will quickly cause a subwoofer to overheat. The best way to avoid clipping is to make sure you have plenty of overhead when it comes to your amplifier. There is still a chance you will over power your subwoofer but the sound is pretty distinct (a knocking as the sub bottoms out for example) and you are much less likely to reach that point...especially with today's subwoofers that are designed to take a beating (no pun intended).

So if I was only give the two choices you proposed, I would choose the 200w sub with the 300w amplifier.

However, as everyone else has already mentioned, the best solution is to buy a 300w sub and a 300w amp. Give us some products (brand and model) that you are considering and we can help you make some selections.
