Aftermarket stereo on an NB

My stock head unit crapped out once before and was replaced by warranty. Just happened again, dealer is ordering a 3rd one. This time, I'm going to get it replaced under warranty, and immediately rip out everything (bose-ectomy) and go with Polk/MOMO components (already bought), a Polk/MOMO amp (already bought), and a new headunit (not bought, and where the question comes in).

According to Crutchfield, barely anything fits. WTF? Is their data wrong? I'm just looking for something uber-simple, not flashy or gimmicky, has a nice-sized volume knob (NO VOLUME BUTTONS!!), and doesn't clash too much with the interior. Something like this JVC with built-in HD Radio tuner.

Is Crutchfield's data on the 2004 Miata wrong? Or is the available mounting depth for head units crazy shallow on the NB Miatas?

If the NB dash is like my NA dash, there is a vertical bar that supports the back of the OEM radio. The radio has a rubber nipple attached by a bolt that slips in the bar, and it supports the radio. When I was putting in the Protege 6-disk radio in my NA the bar was in the way, and i cut it out of the way. So yeah, the stock depth may be an issue, and if you get one that 'doesnt fit' you can just cut out the bar. Make sure to support it otherwise. But any DIN or Double Din should fit in the stock opening.

When I installed my gauge in my vent (took out that whole din) I remember there being a decent amount of room back there, it's just a pain to mess with. Cut my hands up pretty bad too.

I forgot that I did do some cutting to make more room.

Have you thought about taking it out and having a look-see?

Most aftermarket headunit will fit but it might stick out a little due to the miata din design. I installed my Alpine IVA-W200 with the Alpine bracket into my 99 and it stick out about 1/2 " from the AC unit but the most difficult part is getting all the wiring to fit.

I demand you to post pictures of your car.

what size speakers did you go with? and what are you going to do with the speakers in the windblocker?

Very few aftermarket components fit the Miata. Clearwater makes speakers that fit perfectly.

I don't see how "very few" can fit there. I remember there being A LOT of room as far as putting aftermarket stereo in there.

That's what Crutchfield says, and if you look through the Miata vendors on Miata.net you'll come to a similar conclusion. However, you have been in there and I have not, so I will defer to your more extensive experience within the dash.
