Ok, $0.02 from an experienced car owner.
1. too slow!
It has been said before, but you are getting a 2.0 L 4 banger that looks and handles well for round $16K. If you want a 200HP 4 banger then look at the Acura TSX ($26K) or a Saab 93 ($30K). A stock P5 will hold it's own on the hwy and if the point is to get you back and forth to where ever everyday then it is a suitable choice.
2. has a bad transmission (people having problems with it in their first 10k miles). Every vehical manufacturer, even Honda and Toyota have occasional problems with their vehicals. When a vehical is brand new you are obviously not going to see the problems untill it is driven awhile. The important things to look at are long term reliability and how how you local dealer handles warrenty issues. Many members on the board will testify and so will I on the realiblity of the Protege as a whole. My wife aunt, uncle and cousin have 3 Proteges, two '95 's and a 2000. One of the '95's have 180K miles on it the other has 150K. All vehicals have been maintained per manufacturers guidelines. Remember, any idot can buy a car, but it does not mean they take care of it.
3. bad paint (easily chipped, scratched)
Good paint comes on expensive cars, you get what you pay for. Plus, how long to you plan on keeping you vehical? I plan on 10 years and yes, I may have to repaint part or all of it. So I am putting the money I saved in buying my P5.
4. easily dinged and dented
In todays market there are very few steel manufacturers and most of the Japaneese companies buy from the same suppliers.
5. bad sound from stock stereo
I have spent my time desgning system (back in the late '80's early '90's) and to be honest the 6 disc system with the OEM sub ain't bad. If you want to destroy your hearing then spend a few grand on a slamming system, but again for $16K no new car is going to have a stock kick ass system.
6. tires wear too quickly and there are few alternatives for stock rims. I have seen many different rims on the board and stock alloys on a car in the price range is rare. Yes, low profile tires can wear quickly, that is an easy visual. Dis brakes wear quicker as well, but both items perishables and are intended for preformance not longevity.
7. tires are bad in rain, terrible in snow (snow tires are a necessity). When driving on wet pavement and in snow you should drive accordingly. Again, the low profile tire are ment to preform on dry pavement, but if you drive like a sane individaul during hazardous conditions then you will be OK.
8. strange noises??
Anything that is unknown to you is strange, learn your vehical.
9. leans to one side?? Crooked pic.
Final Thought - A wise man learns from his mistakes, a genius learns from the mistakes of others.
Good luck in you car search...
