Hey guys, wondering if anyone who had experience loading new maps on the AFC could give me some help.

Once I start the R4 software I get the first screen where you can enter an new customer, etc. But it won't let me type anything in the lines. The only thing I can do it select file > new customer > and then it prompts me to save, but there is nothing to save. It seems like its not really connected to the AFC. I'm using a serial to usb cable.

According to the R4 instructions, possilble connection problems are the wrong COM ports is selected. Anyone know how to verify this, or change it using windows xp?

Also, I know the igintion has to be on when you write the new map to the ecu, but otherwise the car can be turned off, correct? I was just wondering if the AFC needs power.

If anyone out there can help, it would be much appreciated.

I also tried loading a different map with a serial to usb cable and it didn't work at all. I could type but it wouldn't connect to the ECU at all. I've hooked up to boost log before and it worked fine with a just serial plugs cable.

definitely seems to be a connection problem. I'm gonna go back out the garage and see if I change the COM port # if I can get it to recognize it.

Ok, still not working. I went into device manager and changed the COM port #'s, but still not communicating with the AFC. Does it even make sense to change those if I am using a USB > serial connection? I could understand a serial > serial connection. Hell, I have no clue as of right now.(argh)

morning bumpage.... I'm gonna buy a straight through serial cable today and see if I can get it to work.

I don't have a labtop but everyones that I borrow seems to not have the correct serial port.

if you are using a serial to usb connect you will need to make sure you have the correct drivers. They either shoud of come on the cd with the cable or on the mfg website. without the conversion drivers it wont work.

I actually have the cd with the drivers on it for the serial > usb cable that I bought. However, it has about 10 different drivers on it, and I'm not sure which one is the correct one. I have tried to download some of them but I can't seem to get them to work.

one of the drivers is labled "prolific" and one is labled "cypress". I have no idea what that means. They both say for "USB to serial" drivers. From what I understand you have to install the drivers BEFORE connecting to the AFC? COrrect? Should I reinstall the drivers and then reboot with the AFC connected and the ignition on?(huh)

yes you must install the drivers BEFORE connecting it to teh afc...i have no clue what those names mean...the best idea is to go to the company website and downloading it from there...that way it should direct you to the correct one for your cable and your computer type...

there's only 1 type of serial port..

The last labtop I borrowed had a connecton that looked like a serial port that I needed but had 15 holes instead of 9. What's that all about?
