Hi everyone. I have a '23 CX-5 AWD with 27,600 miles on it. I am super good to the car and pretty much only use it for road trips and have owned it since 12,000 miles. I'm the second owner and purchased it from a dealership.
I was about to hit the road last weekend and immediately noted a new unnerving sound from the rear of the car. At low speeds it sounds kind of like growling or purring and at high speeds it sounds like whining. I ended up taking another car and haven't driven it since, except to try to figure out where its coming from. I ended up putting a go pro under my car and driving it. I also jacked it up and ran it at slow speeds. Clips included.
The noise is hard to pin down. It actually sounds like it coming from each rear wheel equally, but I suspect that it is translating from the rear diff through each axle I tried using a mechanics stethoscope while it was spinning but I couldn't really hear the noise through the stethoscope anywhere.
I should add that while the car is under warranty I live an hour away from the nearest Mazda dealership so I would like to try to get a good idea for what's happening before possibly committing to get it towed there.
Has anyone heard this noise before and can you confirm if it is consistent with diff. failure?
Thanks!
