im so sad right now, i totally killed my car. the road was just wet enough to be really really slick, and some guy in a huge jacked up truck slammed his brakes, and it was too late, i hit him trying to slow down. he had a huge steel bumer so his truck didnt have a scratch but my car looks terrible. the front grill and left headlights are so messed up and my condensor and radiator are messed up and the shock knocked the tranny around so now it wont go into reverse or park. ill get some pics up when i take some. this is horrible, the c ar is 2 months old and so is my license. WHY GOD, WHY!?!?!?! :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

ouch

that sucks! it sounds pretty bad but are you gunna try and have it fixed or is it too late for that? the highways have been slick here in richardson and carrollton. a lot of people dont know how to drive on slick roads, everyone is sliding off the highways. at least 5 wrecks to and from my way to work each day.

at least you are alright tho. it coulda been worse.

eh, it wasnt really like a sideways slide, it was just skidding from the wheels locking up...i gotta get it fixed but itll cost the insurance company a pretty penny.

we all feel for you.....and with this being your first car too....as stated.....at least you are okay and didn't get hurt.

He took the words right out of my mouth.
In our slub we have had 2 poeple crash one bad and one not so bad.
But you a live cars can get replaced...but it feels like you just got kicked...(nuts)

this is horrible, the c ar is 2 months old and so is my license. WHY GOD, WHY!?!?!?!

WHY!?!?!?! You were driving on a slick road too close to a large vehicle in front of you, that's why. Because braking distance increases geometrically relative to speed, such that it takes about 4 times the distance to stop at 60mph that it does at 30. Sorry you twisted your car, but you should have payed attention in physics class and driven more safely. It sure is a bad way to learn a harsh lesson. Sorry.

Easy on him, Heiduk.

Not all of us were lucky enough to have a shiny new Protege as a first car; but we all learned a few important physics lessons with whatever we were driving!

Sorry to hear about the damage on your P5, glad you're ok.

Bondo

I feel for you...

That really must suck... I to got a P5 for my first car(MT) and i dont know what i would do if I got in ANY TYPE of accident... Sorry to hear about it... glad your ok

Did the air bags go off? If they did, do you think it helped in you not getting injured? Or did they hit your face hard and hurt you more then you would have been???

Im just asking because my brother is against the bags and Im for them, but I have never known anyone that they have gone off with to get a real opinion.

You mean exponetialy?
Geometricly sounds like a traingles involved here.

Sorry to hear that man. It wasn't clean in your post...I assume youj rear ended someone? This is where ABS would help out a lot.

no, i wasnt going fast at all, not even fast enough for the airbags to come out...also, i dont think abs wouldve helped because there was no turning involved.

You can use this little story against your bro.... My friend got into a fender-bender about 2 months back in her 2002 VW Golf. Nothing serious, but the bags did deploy. The hot gas from the air bad deployment heated up the VW symbol on her steering wheel so much so that it burnt her.... She's now branded by the VW symbol on her arm :) Kinda funny when you think about it... But what if that were her face??

That goes gainst me. Im the one that thinks air bags are good.

ABS prevents your wheels from locking up, thus allowing you to stop in a shorter distance. Locked wheels INCREASE stopping distances. It has little to do with turning while braking. Although, you CAN turn while applying full brake pressure if you have ABS since your wheels will continue to turn so that's an added benefit.

Sorry about your incident. I had a similar one when I first got my license too. It's a hard lesson to learn. Next time, keep an eye out on your distance to the car in front of you, and adjust it based on road conditions. Just get your car fixed and use this incident to learn from. Good luck.

In addition...

to the ABS, the Electronic Brakefore Distribution that is part of the ABS system on the P5 will help in a turning situation by trying to limit the amount of yaw when the ABS is functioning.
You are fortunate to have the P5 as a first car. When my kids first got their driving lincenses, they got $2,500 beaters for their first ride, knowing they would most likely bend them while "learning" to drive. And yes, they did. Jim

I got one for you then buddy... I was hit head on in 1993 by a drunk driver in a dodge aries. I was driving my parents brand new Nissan Maxima... The came into my lane at ~45 MPH while I was going ~50. I had just enough time to move my foot from the gas to the brake when he hit. He died on the scene, and I was only bunged up a little. Without the airbag and seatbelt, I would have been killed... I only ended up with a broken left ankle, broken right foot, Right collar bone, 2 ribs on the right side, and my left wrist. I had two really bad looking black eyes from the airbag, but s***, at least I could see at all... lol Without the airbag, the steering column would have hit me with enough force to break my back or neck really easily. All the junk above sounds like a lot, but if I could show a picture of the car, it sounds like nothing... Luckily the guys passenger side headlight hit the middle of the front of my car, since I did manage to swerve slightly. The passenger side seat in my car was touching the dash. Anyways, I think airbags are a good thing. They may not be for a smaller person(ie. kids), but they saved my life.

Anyways, sorry you got into a wreck BlackP5, at least no one was hurt... Good luck in getting it fixed.

The P5 is my first car too. The reason I got it was because I am a newbie. I found myself very comfortable in the car. Its smaller for easy parallell parking and backing in. It feels like a go-cart. Its braking is fantastic (I have ABS also).
Its not so powerfull that a newbie does not get too carried away , but it handles and brakes well enough so that if I make a newbie mistake, me and the P5 can usually get out of it.

P5....The perfect first car!!!!!

That was a scary story, Im glad that you are still alive. Thats what I thought. If airgbags where no good, then I dont think we would have them.

Thanks for the story, even though it was painfull one. OUCH!!!!

I don't want to start a war or anything but abs on slick surfaces INCREASES stopping distances. It's function is to allow the driver to continue to steer to avoid an accident. On dry surfaces, abs usually does not activate until extremely low speeds and has little effect on stopping distances. If abs actually provided shorter braking distances, it would be used in racing. If you don't believe me read your owners manual which states that braking distances are increased on cars with abs, or do a search on the web regarding braking distances and abs.
