A Rebuild Story - A Forged MP3 Motor

I'm amazed I just now finally saw this thread.

The engine is so pretty sitting in the MP3. You're so close Steve ... can't wait to finally see it running.

Had a "minor" problem last night that killed my working on the car... one of the bolts for the control arms stripped out in the frame... so I'm going to recut the threads as best as I can and see if it will torque down... hopefully do so tonight... otherwise I'll have to recut larger threads on Friday to get that arm on... Unfortunately, until I get the arms on and can push the car out of the garage I'm not going to start it up. I did crank it last night... gave it about 3- 5 second turn overs and it built pressure and everything checked out... should have moved coolant as well so hopefully air bubbles will work their way out as well.

Startup is hardest on a car because of the fact that the first couple of seconds when the motor starts up there isn't any oil in the bearings (other than residue film) and the initial load of the motor turning under it's own power and the force of those first few power strokes can cause metal to metal contact and cause bearing wear. Because this motor is completely green it takes even longer for the oil passages to all be filled and there will be even more combustion strokes that will occur with improper oiling. So by getting at least some oil into the systems by cranking it a couple times with no load will be less damaging then it going that many more strokes with the much higher cylinder pressure and crank loads resultant from idling.

Thats why you should grease all bearings when installing, valve caps, cams, everything that suffers a lot of friction or load.
Try using 10w-30 for break in.

I use those petroleum jellys for babys

I got her down on the ground and tried starting it today.. no spark.. so Friday I'm going to trouble shoot that... I have to figure out if the Microtech is seeing the CAS ok or not.. that is my guess right now.. so here' hoping I'm right!

Later.

Hopefully! But I have a date with an oscillscope, a multimeter, and my car Friday night... here's hoping i find it! :)

I think I narrowed down off of the wiring diagrams where the problem is. So it should be reasonably easy to fix. I'll find out when I tackle it tonight.. I'm really itching for a drive in this thing! It looks so sexy back down on the ground again! I'll try to get some glamour shots of it this weekend once I get it buffed out and waxed after I get some miles on it :)

Motor ran today... Had some "interesting" issues, but it did run... my starter is fried so I have to replace or dismantle and repair that myself yet... But long story short there ended up having to be some sort of blockage in my exhaust as my catalytic converter essentially melted and blew the core out the exhaust... but the motor ran ;) LOL.

Glad to hear...but that doesnt sound to good blowing out the cat...wonder what happened?

you didn't stuff a rag up in there or anything did you? or maybe a family of muskrats moved in and you killed them!!! MURDERER!!!!!!!

No idea.. but something was F*ed up to cause that... I'm going to tear that piping out tomorrow night maybe and try running the car open exhaust and see if that helps... but yeah something was messed up!

Holy Crap, Good Luck Today. I'm doing the same thing but only had a problem that the #1 injector wire was off... Ran like ass for the first try, but now it's starting to run better each time...

I'm trying to figure out if the way mine was running was due to the exhaust issue or if there is anything else going on... it just sounded so strange... it didn't vibrate or shake the car too badly, and once in a while it'd get a miss/pop that seemed different, so I'm pretty sure I had all 4 cylinders, but it was real sluggish and unresponsive to the throttle... but if the exhaust was blocked as it seems it was then there are obvious reason for that though too! :) So we'll see I'll pull the exhaust and disassemble the start in hopes I can get that working again without replacing it and go from there... otherwise things will have to wait until Tuesday or Wednesday before I work on them again.

later!

Well I retimed the cams, cut out the catalytic, redid the belt, and made some additional adjustments and she fired up on the first shot :).. I have a vac leak somewhere I believe as I get a terrible reading at idle and it is a little unresponsive... so if I can get that sorted out she should be good to go... just wanted you guys to know it is up and running.. we'll troubleshoot and tune it in tomorrow and I'll finally give all those pictures and updates I've been promising...

I even have a video of it shooting fireballs from the exhaust on misfires ;) LOL.
