Can anyone tell me why there is a good sized puff of black smoke shootin outta my exhaust when i shift...??? i'm guessin it's cuz the car runs rich...how the hell do i fix it

do u know if it's cuz the car runs rich though, or it's just something stupid that i gotta live with

it's cause the car runs uber rich.you hit the nail on the head man. There's not much you can do, but maybe lean it out a bit by upping the boost :D, but not too high, cause too lean means our engine goes boom

because, you have a catless down pipe on your car. there are no cat's to burn up the extra fuel before it leaves your exhaust.........

who makes a good hi-flow cat, i haven't looked much, but i can't find anyone who makes any for the msp. but wait a second here....if i put on a hi-flow cat, that means less cat resistance then before = even more black smoke puffs....eh?? that won't the mess with the sensors or anything will it?

no, putting a cat on there will INCREASE the exhaust flow resistance since currently, you have no cats. you did install a MIL eliminator right or are you throwing a cel? that might be the problem.

if you want a good hi-flow cat though, check out random technology cats. expensive but good. me, i'd settle for a magnaflow or carsound cat. $100 or less off ebay.

well i've got the one cat under the shifter in the middle of the exhaust, so i do have 1 cat, the downpipe only took out the small waste of space cat and the resonator. how much is the magnaflow cat??? oh, heres a good question, how the hell do i find out what production # my car is, i always see people with #'s and i can't figure it out.

Oh, in your other thread you said you have a catless DP i don't know what your problem may be then.......i say don't worry about it and enjoy your car!

you can call this number for mazda and get you production # 1-800-222-5500 be sure to have your V.I.N # in hand.

cool, thanx man.

the catless downpipe just goes from the turbo and bolts on the big cat. if i get a hi-flow cat, thats what it will replace, that's why i thought there would less resistance making more poof, but you gotta point, it ain't hurtin my car and i can't see it, so forget about it

sorry if this is a stupid question...

is it possible to replace the cats with hi-flow cats without changing the muffler look and staying very close to stock sound? I want to flow better, and I don't have to worry about emissions here, but I very much worry about volume.

yes it's possible all you need to do is change the midpipe to a 2-1/2" pipe with high flow cats. Leave the stock muffler in place. pick up a few HP and the sound is the same until much higher rpm, then only a tiny bit louder.
