I plan on putting my protege away for the winter and rebuilding the engine. so i have a few questions.
1)what is the best forged rod, piston combo.
2)looking at a fidanza flywheel and a stage 2 clutch.Which company clutch would you reccomend.
3) are the mazdaspeed and regular protege crankshafts the same part number.

thanks for the input

the absolute best combo would be pauter rods and wiseco pistons. i got the k1 long rods and wiseco pistons. ive seen the arias pistons crack. k1 is ur best bet, pauters are a bit pricy.

1) Pauter and arias
2) I have exedy with no complaints
3) I believe all 3rd gen proteges had forged crankshaft so i believe so but id wait for another person to chime in

most all the fsde crankshafts are forged, and i wouldnt reccomend arias over wiseco. ive seen many cases where the arias pistons cracked and broke apart. ive yet to see a wiseco piston do that. but as for the pauter rods, they are the best but will run u nearly 800 dollars for the rods alone. i payed only 925 for my k1 long rods and coated wiseco pistons.

cp pistons split the price difference and are what a lot of people are going with now. i would not go with arias due to cracking issues from aggressive timing maps. if your goal is 400-450whp+, i would go with wiseco/pauter. otherwise, cp/k1 should be fine.
ACT clutches are solid - look at your intended hp goal and pick the clutch to match. i never see complaints about them, i have seen some people unhappy with the exedy decision. their stage 1 is good but above that is a little more iffy.

1: Pauter rods, wiesco pistons
2: I have the ACT stage 3 clitch with the Fidanza flywheel, It is working good for me so far
3: Dont know

im running wiseco/k1, as for k1 i know when i bought them there were short supply, im not sure if thats still an issue because i bought them in march/april 2010. i wish i would have went with the pauter rods since i had the money at the time, and im glad that i didn't go with arias pistons now hearing about the cracking issues

cool thanks for the input. im looking at the 300-325 hp range only because it mu summer daily.well it looks like pauter rods and weisco pistons it is and the act clutch set up.The only reason i asked about the crank is because im buying a new one for the build just so i dont have to use over sized bearings if it needs to be machined.

thanks again for the input

Your crank will probably not need to be machined if you have not spun a bearing. A simple polish will more than likely take care of it. Bring it to the machine shop before you waste money on a new one.

I do not have much experience with this platform yet but ACT seems to be a pretty reliable idea when you are thinking about a clutch that needs to hold mild power levels.

unless you have a fairly unlimited budget, i dont know why youre going with pauter/wiseco. you can save close to 500 bucks by going with CP and K1, and theyre more than sufficient to handle your power goals.
similarly, i dont know why you would go with exedy stage 2. they arent even rated to hold that much power! get the ACT extreme street clutch - rated at 340, and from everything ive read, a better clutch all around.

im pretty sure maxx mazda cracked three or four arias pistons. im also pretty damn positive hes one of the most knowledgeable people on these boards.

I figure if i go with the better stuff from the begining, andif i ever wanted more power i have parts that will hold up to the abuse.yes the act clutch set up is what im going with

1)pauter and wiseco, thats what i have, love it so far
3)yes, all PROTEGE's are forged crank, other cars, like the 626 or the probe, may not be depending on the year

I went Spec 2+, I have always liked Spec and they are a 15 min drive from my house. My clutch doesn't feel heavier than stock by much, but definitely has some bite to it.

oh yea, and i have a spec stage 1...dont really like it, but its not specs fault at all
back when i had it put in (mistake, did all my own work since then) they didnt resurface the flywheel, so it really chatters ALOT
