STREET RACING IS STUPID!!

I met a guy about a month ago with a 2001special addition miata. He approached me because of my turbo and wanted to turbo his car. We met at a hangout that lots of import guys go to in Miami. I met him during another chance encounter while I was on patrol in my police vehicle because I saw him driving with a shiny intercooler showing in his grill. We talked a bit and he showed me his setup. That night we went to the hangout and had a meal with some friends. I met with this guy a few more times and then went to a wedding out of town. When I returned to Miami I discovered that a miata had crashed drag racing on a US1.........a zone that I regularly patrol that resulted in a rollover and fatality.

That fatality was the guy I befreinded a month ago

What happned was that the miata took off at a light drag racing another car and subsequently lost tracrion and impacted a palm tree at 50 mph. This did not kill him. The cars wheel got stuck on a curb and flipped it around causing the miata toslide for several feet upside down and killing the driver instantly.

A week has elapsed and by chance I met a nice older gentleman while on duty at a local resteraunt.........it just so happned to be the father of the guy that just died.

What a horrible tragedy indeed and all for a stupid street race.

PLEASE DO NOT DRAG RACE ON PUBLIC STREETS!!!!

I wanted to share this with everbody here and spread the word, its not worth it to risk your life and others for a race. There are to many variables that we cannot control............so please dont do it. Go pay money and autocross or drag at the track.......

something to think about...........

Spoolin, I am very sorry to hear this news.....I for one know first hand what its like to lose a friend from something stupid and avoidable.....it really stinks.

Please....if by chance you meet or see his father again....express the condolences of the whole club here.

I hope that the people that have responded to the "do you street race" thread going right now, READ AND HEED this message.....for you know as well as I did....Spoolins friend didn't go out that night thinking he wasn't going to go home.

SO, to all of you out there, if you don't care about yourselves.....think about and care about those that love you, and go home to them every night, all in one piece.

I believe many tracks have street legal drag events (sometimes weekly)...its an inexpensive way to watch or participate in a controlled race environment. No problems...just friends and good safe times.

Sorry about the loss man...

Sorry to hear about your friend,

I can relate, I lost a cool friend in a similar tragic incident. While draggin his 5.0 Mustang he took a curve way too fast and wrecked. Landed on the driver side and skid a good 20 feet. He was also the only one in the car wearing a seat belt. The rest of the three passengers survived with minor scratches, he was alive after the car had flipped and landed on his side cuz the rest of the guys in the car heard him say something.......... I was at his funeral the day after, his mom was going crazy as they layed her son into his grave. She kept on saying 'her son is just standing there....how come no one sees it.' To this day that scene is quite vivid in my memory. My condolences to the family that lost thier son. Take care all and be well.

That sucks Terry...

Two lessons learned really though, one don't drag race on the street. And two, a roll bar is always a good idea in a convertible.

I have seen way to many rollovers with convertibles, talk about road rash, and losing your head.:(

I was unaware of the street racing thread. I admit I was no saint..........when I was younger, I was involved in a few races. But as you get older and realize how stupid it is then you get reinforced by incidents like this.................it just doesnt pay.

Same here Spoolin.....and like you said...lookin back...well I never had ANYONE tell me how stupid it was....I was never part of a club like this with some older more experienced people involved....had I been...well there is certainly a lot of things I may have not done...and looking back....I have someone to thank for me STILL being here. I hope that some of the guys and gals here reconsider taking things into the street....and take them to a track insted.

first off, spoolin, that sucks

i NEVER street-race, if someone wants to smack-talk, or "rev-it-up", i'll tell them, ok...see me in an autocross.

street-racing is stupid.

Damn..sucks to hear stuff like this. I hate it when a idiot in a civic or accord try to pull on me and see if I want to race. I just ignore them nowadays....used to race, but its just the same lame stuff over and over, plus I know someone who got seriously hurt racing on a side road.

Your a police officer? That must be a huge advantage for your hobby of hooking up cars :). Do you still have to worry about emissions? or can you get around that stuff.

Luckily florida has no emmisions:D

Being a POPO:) has its advantages. You never have to worry about getting tickets or getting harrased. I do not mess with any automotive enthusiats unless they are doing some stupidshit. I must admit I like to give punk ricers a hard time.......no tickets or anything just serving my community be being the car fashion police or educatind young stupid ricers on updated import styles. Lol j/k

I'm sure whats more common than actual street racing is street light racing...now I know everyone from first time drivers to grandmothers has done that. Also...the occasional 3 am run on the freeway when not a soul is around.

I have no interest in real street racing...just attending can get one in so much trouble with the police. At least on the track youre less likely to get shot by the guy you just beat.

I remember seeing that on the news last week. Unfortunate loss for the family and friends.

-edit- Lack of taste this morning.

no offense guys....I really don't want to deviate from what the thread's topic is, but I just had to say, I REALLY want to move to Miami.........no emmisions and Terry cruisin the streets makin sure my car doesn't get messed with? I mean I work at a Starbucks......I'm already the best friend of the chp out here (special police discount I give) one of those guys even took me out in their skyline (his own personal ride not his cruiser) Anyway, now I'm even getting off my topic..........
Damn I wanna move to miami

im sorry to hear about your friend terry, that sucks when anyone you know dies, especially over something that could of been prevented like street racing. ill keep my racing on the track.

I know exactly what you mean. I do feel sorry for these people's families when they die for this stupid reason, but a small part of me is happy that one less stupid kid that can kill a mother and her children while just going to the grocery store is not here anymore. It makes it that much safer for me and my future family. It relly pisses me off when I'm on the highway and someone passes me at over 100mph during rush hour traffic. That is just stupid!

Sorry to hear about the loss, Terry.

I'm not Mr. Innocent myself...I occasionally drag race a car from a stop light, etc...but I usually keep it under 80...and I'm always on multi lane roads when I do it. And I'll only do it when no one is around.
