Hi All,

I have a 95 protege and yesterday on my drive back home after filling gas, my CEL light came on and is still on....i checked my gas cover and it's tightened...any sites with possible reasons why the CEL might come on...

Any other help?

Thanks

go to Autozone and get it checked for free. (they'll tell you the error code and what it is and how to fix it) i doubt anyone on here can just spit out an answer for you simply that it could be anything (maybe the gas is watered down a bit?)

ps: a loose gas cover wouldn't throw a CEL

by CEL you mean engine light?

i just checked mine on my '93 protege gt, it only takes about a minute.

"To determine which sensor or system component is malfunctioning, connect a jumper wire (paper clip) between the TEN and GND terminals at the DIAGNOSTIC test connector in the engine compartment. Make sure the battery voltage is greater then 11 volts, the transmission in Neutral, the accessories are off, the throttle valve is closed and the engine is at normal operating temperature, then turn the ignition switch to the ON position but do not start the engine.

The diagnostic code is the number of flashes indicated on the CHECK ENGINE light. If no codes are stored, the CHECK ENGINE light will come on for a few moments, then go out. If any malfunction has been detected, the light will blink the first digit(s) of the code at a long interval(s) and then blink the second digit of the code at short interval(s). For example, a code 34 (IAC valve) will first blink three flashes and then pause and blink four quick flashes. NOTE: If the code is simply a single digit number, the CHECK ENGINE light will flash in the quick mode."

how do you know what each code means?

how do you know 34 is IAC valve?

the guys on clubprotege helped me out

"Codes:
02 Distributor Ne-signal
03 Distributor G-signal
08 Airflow Sensor
09 Coolant temp. sensor
10 Intake air temp. sensor
12 Throttle position sensor
14 Barometric pressure sensor
15 O2 sensor
17 O2 sensor has detected a rich or lean condition
25 Solenoid valve (fuel pressure regulator)
26 Solenoid valve (purge control)
34 IAC valve
41 Solenoid valve (VICS)"

it's really simple to do, i'm only 18 and i really don't know much about cars.

my explanation in english:
your engine should be warm. get a paper clip, open your hood and find the little black diagnostics box located near the battery just like in the pic above. open it, stick one end of the paperclip in the TEN and the other end in the GND. leave it like that, sit in your driver's seat and turn the ignition to ON, watch how many times it blinks.

eg.
34 = 3 long blinks and 4 quick blinks
17 = 1 long blink and 7 quick blinks
03 = 3 quick blinks etc.

if you forget where the TEN and GND are, a diagram should be under the cap/lid of the box when you flip it open

Hes refering to the auto parts store that carries the scanner used to determine why you have a CEL. Just go to any suto parts store there in Canada and aask around if they have that scanner and have your car scanned. It could be something mulfunctioning of waht not.
