88 Gxl New Project, Race Setup!

88 GXL
THE INTRO
Just got my first rotary, i always wanted a porsche 944 Turbo S, and found 2nd gens were modeled after 944's for much less $$!!! Neways i never liked JDM after skooling so many of em in my Dodge neon, but my dad having owned and tuned RX 4's and even a suzuki RE-5 ( Rotary Motorcycle! )convinced me to try it out, I guess im now a ricer.

I love the handling of the car but would like to perfect mostly it's response, and power. I'd like to dampen the rear-steer, and remove the wayy too light powersteering. The car is very Tight in, Loose out, yet lot's of trail Braking is required on a light fuel load, and it's hard to get a nice feel with those steering adaptations.

I can feel my Springs are a little saggy so it's time to replace those, wondering about any tried, tested, and proven ones you guys use.

The brakes are nice, big 4 piston fronts but it throws the balance off for the inadequate rears (nice for trail braking but balance is a little too biased).

Dad says the 13b's rev limit is way to low, "They can go to 13,000 no problem and last 400,000 k," he says. Don't no if I should trust him.

the cars power is good, but in Winnipeg, lot's of unpatrolled long straight void's (dark roads), so imma need some major power here. I heard most of the drivetrain is built to handle much Higher HP but this brings my biggest downer on the car.

Transmition!!! Syncros suck, found myself double-clutching down to third sometimes, box just doesnt like that gear, and very tall gearing, probably going to get myself a lighter flywheel.

Now for the fun stuff
I gotta find some good cheap tuning options for the car
Looking at racing beat exhaust, I like the true Dual, but in the long run would it be worth the extra $$

Looking at new computer and stand-alone fuel, i'm not much of a turbo fan, just doesn't fit my style of driving, so I don't need any KPA vs RPM or RMP map features, but some good air/fuel, and rev control would be nice!

Clutches. I'd like something powerful but with the Hydralic setup I don't know what my limits are.

Nice wheel/tire setup! Used nismo, Skyline wheels, seem about a good size, and affordable, but open to suggestions!!

don't need body kits, I like the steel paneling neways, when i kiss a curb i just bang it out lol. However downforce and Drag coef.'s do matter.

Brakes, no clue where to start, Nice calipers already, maybe go to the junker and find better rears (first) , but some drilled/slotted rotor's are on my mind.

Goal is for highly response in all aspects (power, and steering input).
1/4 mile in low 13's
0-60 approx 5 - 5 1/4 sec
High ceiling top speed
1 or higher lateral G
But above all, the ability to destroy 500 HP turbos in and outta corners heh heh.

THANKS GUYS, EVEN JUST FOR READING THIS HUGE THING!!
GET BACK TO ME, LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR INPUT :)

First off wrong forum dude try *Please DO NOT send new members to other forums!!!* I myself happened upon an 88 GXL in february. Here's the long and the short

Power
Not much you can do but the gains are good
Intake Header Exhaust will get you half way. I'd go with the true duals if smog isn't an issue I have the dual cat back with a bonez superflow downpipe. I didn't touch the mani. If you want huge na power the only way to go is Bridge porting or Peripheral porting. These will get you into that 14k rpm range your dad was talking about but don't expect the motor to last too long on the bridgeport.

Brakes
Don't touch them. Get some stainless lines and some pads. Change compounds for bias I'd say but nobody really messes with the brakes since you're looking at a cool 3 grand to get something that can outperform the stock setup

Suspension
Your suspension is just old. Go for some RB springs(cheap if used) and KYB AGX 4 ways and some poly bushing

Driveline
Fix the shifter bushings and your shifts might get better

Aero
Don't need crap. The car is extremely slippery even by modern standards in a windtunnel.

Wheels/Tires
BBS Convertible wheels are 13lbs. You may only be able to fit a 205 tire on them but may be the best upgrade you can make for such little money. I got some on the way but I am in the process of cleaning up some 94-97 mustang gt wheels. All 94-04 mustang wheels fit so long as they are under 8" wide. not light by any stretch but fill the fender well(good).

As for your requirements

Goal is for highly response in all aspects (power, and steering input).
1/4 mile in low 13's sure with a bridgeport or pp
0-60 approx 5 - 5 1/4 sec ?????
High ceiling top speed uh who cares
1 or higher lateral G not without r comps my friend
But above all, the ability to destroy 500 HP turbos in and outta corners heh heh. shoulda bought a 3rd gen sorry to say

Please remember your car is old a **** so fix the thing first. Don't ignore the wear and tear items on your car that are twenty years old(or you'll get a car fire from your pulsation damper failing). www.mazdatrix.com and http://www.blackdragonauto.com are most valuble parts depots. Please patronize lest you look like every other old and busted car out there.

Hey thanks for the info :) :)

put's things into a good perspective and some really good advice on tuning thanks soo much!!!

ok hes has some grey areas in his list... 1 if you wanna upgrade brakes go with a tll setup thats a upgraded brake...

next for power how much do you wanna spend? motor swaps are not too bad to dump in a turbo'd motor like the cosmo 13brett but dont take my advice i been building these since most people here were crapin mustard...lol

http://member.cardomain.com/gentalmon <---this was the car i just recently sold built up from ground up...

you want susp. go rb for sway bars, springs are all over the place just depends on your pocket pm me if you want some email addys to get you the parts you need i have a list of them from low budget to ocean sized pockets.
