7K woops!

So I met an old friend for dinner last night. Had not seen em in about 8-9 years. After we finished I offered him a ride back to his car since he wound up parking 5 blocks away and lowell MA isn't a great place to be walking alone at night. He commented on my car, I told him it wasn't any old mazda hatch.

Long story short I relined the car in first gear proving my point. The needle hit 7k on the tac and i actually felt the car loose power. So im wondering how bad for the car was this? I suspect a one time thing won't hurt it, but im still kinda noobish at it.

It was wierd because the car just didn't want to go for some reason in 1st. When I hit second it really took off though. I didn't make it to third, aka fun gear, because there was a stop sight that i would have wound up running at about 60mph.

The best part was when the car did its bullet impression in 2nd gear his fiancee who was in the back let out a squeal! I found it very umm..... well lets just say I had to remind myself she was my good friends fiancee.

You just went up the rev limiter. The car runs out of steam up there is why you felt the lack of power. The reason you didn't hear it bounce off the rev limiter is because we have a soft limiter that holds it at the highest RPM instead of backing it up. It's not bad for the car unless you are there all the time. They installed a rev limiter for a reason. I get into that region 2 to 3 times per auto-x run.

what he says

Thanks guys.... I figured it wasn't too bad just wanted to put my own stupid paranoia to bed.

I also call shenanigans on that!

I haven't AutoX in my MS3 (yet), but I sat at rev limiter plenty of times in my T/A while doing runs. It's a protection that is there for a reason. To protect.

If it was going to cause damage, they would set the rev limiter for a lower rev limit.

Your engine will get damn hot. Just like in Need For Speed: Underground. Because that game is ultra realistic.

I chipped my Audi s4 which deactivates the rev limiter. My piston went through my cylinder head. That's why I'm looking at Mazdas :(

Removing the rev limiter?! tsk tsk....

Thats like removing the windshield wipers because you never plan on driving in the rain... eventually you are going to get stuck out in a rainstorm.

I know constant high (as in, over stock redline) rpm heats up the valve springs and can cause them to lose tension... making valve float more likely everytime you rev it past redline. Usually factory rev limiters are set conservatively enough that it would take years of bouncing off the limiter to damage anything. Much more likely to happen on a car with a raised rev limiter using stock valvetrain parts.

+1 power till redline, but mods are listed below

for a stock speed id think you'd get bored in the upper RPM range waiting for it to hit the limiter, but i can how it wouldn't be hard in 1st gear to tap it for a second if your getting some wheel spin, still wont hurt anything once or twice.

I understand why the car looses power at the high end. I have just never taken a car to 7k rpms. I think next time I want to make the car really fly I will get out of first and second ASAP, and let it take off in 3rd. The only reason why I wound up reving the car that hard was because seemed a little sleepy, like it didn't want to do its fast thing that night. It is quite possible my wheels where slipping although the traction light never came on and I never felt anything slip.

Still it was fun.. I might make a hobby of taking pretty girls in my car and making them scream.... that was fun.

Question: What is with the discrepancy in those dyno results? The car is rated for 263hp with 280lb-ft torque. Some of the stock cars weren't even close to that. I understand there a loss through the system but still...

And it looks like a CAI adds quite a kick.... hmmmmm :D

he bought his car heavily modded with what appears to be a standback...

yea silly me already subbed in chicken's other thread, couldn't put 2 and 2 together. america's schools are apparently failing through me

either way all i have is a drop-in K&N air filter and lose power somewhere in the 5k rpm range just like everyone else with a stock ms3. small turbo and electronic throttle is to blame
