500 miles out of warranty check engine light

Argh! (bang) The engineers couldn't have timed it better. 500 miles out of warranty and the check engine light goes on.

A few weeks back we took our 2012 5 in because my wife said the car lunged a few times after coming to a stop. This was at 35940ish miles. Dealer said couldn't find anything wrong. Now at 36500 miles, the car lunged with me driving and the check engine light went on. Going to try and take it in tomorrow. What do you guys think, will they cover it under warranty?

They have to make you sign for a diagnostic fee in case the problem is not warranty related just to cover their asses. However, snorlax is right, this should be covered under the 5yr/60K powertrain warranty. Not to mention that you also documented the same problem prior to reaching 36k miles when they didn't find anything wrong.

Document that I signed there had an est of $0. They called me back to say that I would have to pay $145 if it is found not to be powertrain related. I mentioned the whole "It's the same problem I had a few weeks ago" but was told that the check engine light is on now so that's a different problem.

My 2010 sport auto (about 31k miles) also lunges when coming to a stop when cold. The rpm would drop below 500 and kick up to about 900, it does this a few times before settling down. Sometimes the rpm dropped too low and the engine stalls. It can happen (though less likely) even when I coast to a stop in neutral. Once warmed up it is fine.

Stealership just called. Said seems like it may be a canbus issue. Different modules not taking to each other. Tons of codes being thrown. Forgot to mention in my original post that on the way to the dealership this morning the Stability Control light was going crazy and the Automatic Trans light was also flashing from time to time. Powertrain cover this?

Keep pushing for Powertrain warranty. If dealership doesn't want to help you make sure to call Mazda and get a District Manager involved.

Call Mazda if the dealer will not budge. Or take it somewhere else that will deal with Mazda for you. 500 miles out of warranty would not cut it for me if I just had it in. I would not even agree to sign for the $145.

On your original trip to the dealer (when in warranty), did the paper work show any codes pulled? I'd be suspicious that they may have messed something up when you took it in the first time. Good luck.

Says no code were found. I'm suspicious about that as well. Especially since my wife and I have been discussing this. I described to her what lights were indicator lights were on i.e. Stability Control and AT and she said that the Stability Control light has been going on/off and on for a while. Way before we took it in the first time. She just thought it was normal to flash occasionally.

Mainland. Haha you'd think Japan -> Hawaii would be cheaper for them (uhm). But goes from Japan -> US Mainland -> Hawaii. Not enough volume I guess.

By the way, it's really good preventive maintenance to regularly replace your transmission fluid. The tranny is a known weak spot. I"d suggest at least every 30k if not 15k intervals. There are several threads on the topic. I don't know what they are recommending for ATF change intervals for newer M5's but originally it was "lifetime".

I think it is still lifetime. There is no mention of it in the scheduled maintenance section of the manual. Scheduled Maintenance

Any fluid can be lifetime fluid. It may just be a very short lifetime.
