This site shows you the difference between a 480p (EDTV) and 720p (HDTV) image. It's the first site to do so in a clear way....just move your mouse over the image to view the 720p version, and move it off the image to see the 480p version.

(If you're not familiar with the terminology, 480p is what you would get from a progressive-scan DVD player, while 720p is one of the forms of HDTV. The numbers refer to the number of "lines" or rows of pixels in the image. A higher # gives a higher resolution and a clearer picture)

(edit - forgot link lol) http://alteredbeast.sitesled.com/480vs720.html

only thing i'm kinda iffy on 720p is that you can see EVERYTHING, in the 720p fantastic 4 sample, for example, it shows all the little bumps on Jessica Alba's face, whereas in the 480p sample, yes it's not as clear, but her skin looks much smoother

but yeah, most of the time the higher the resolution the better it is :)

however i'm still in 480p land for the moment, no point to go up unless i actually have a native 720p projector ;)

That is amazing. You don't even realize what you are missing until you can compare the two pictures back-to-back. Very cool indeed.

for all of those firm believers in 1080i out there, it is not as good as you can have available. im a supervisor in the entertainment department for circuit city. 720p actually looks better then 1080i. you get more verticle to horizontal lines of resolution (twice as many to be exact) in 720p then you do with 1080i. we have to tell customers all day the differences between the two. the easiest way to tell them is that 1080i and 720p are both HD signal strengths but 720p looks better. progressive scan is always better then interlaced (thats the p and i). for everyone looking to purchase a new tv and wants to have the 1080p tv's, realize this, currently there are no broadcasting stations broadcasting in 1080p. the only way to truely view your tv in 1080p (if capable) is to have a blueray DVD player with an HDMI cable hookup (or if you have a polaroid 1080p component hookups), in the future there will be plenty of channels in 1080p but currently they all broadcast in 1088i/720p where available.....jsut remember if you want you tv to look its best for HD right now, have your resolution aspect ration set to 720p.

1080 here too

Boo. 720p is a waste of money IMO. 1080 for nearly the same cost. Xbox360 looks great in HD too ;)

I heard 1080 is only good if you have the right wires and also only good if you are a certain distance from the tv. after said distance it is like 720 or something. forget what the distance was though, something pretty low though

A lot of Best Buys have their TVs set up to do direct (real world) comparisons from 1 channel in HD versus the same channel in SD. That's a better indication of the difference IMO.

Those comparisons suck though. They do not have an individual drop coming in to service each HDTV. The line is split so many times int he stores that you are not recieving normal signal strength so you are not really getting the best HD picture. Plus they typicallly use standard bad cables to hook them up. :)
