3rd gear trouble

so whenever i'm drivin at higher rpms, when i shift from 2nd to 3rd, it grinds in. yes i have the clutch depressed all the way. it makes a nice crunchy sound/feeling. itz gettin to be a pain. anyone else have this problem/can offer some advice. thanks

It's a known issue in the 2002 P5's There is a TSB on the issue, do a seach and you can find more info about that. I brought mine to the dealer a few times with the problem and they wouldn't fix it. Eventually it will start popping out of gear, which is fun if you are pulling out fast and it pops out and you start bouncing off the rev limiter.

The dealer did end up fixing it after I traded the car in and I guess it was popping out of gear during test drives with potential customers.

is there certain time limits or restrictions to get a TSB done? my 3rd gear hates me

If you are still under warranty they may do something for you, but if not you are on your own. The TSB doesn't really mean anything, it does not entitle anyone to a repair. It is merely a procedure for the tech to diagnose and repair an issue.

The first time I brought my car in for this problem they told me that I needed to hold the clutch in for 5 seconds before shifting, I suggested that maybe I should roll to a stop in between each shift, then the gear would never grind. Amazingly enough, they couldn't show me anything in writing from Mazda that stated the 5 second rule..

I had the same problem... I just had to re adjust the clutch pedal... Since I bought the car I had to slam the clutch to the floor to shift. Where your clutch pedal is there will be a stopper level just re adjust that and it wont be as bad, you feel a little bit of a grind if you go really slow, but if you go normal shifting speeds you wont even tell and it'll take you like a few days to get use to the clutch it will feel weird bring it up.
Cheers

how loud? if i have my radio on a decent level i cant hear mine. it sounds like it is coming from under the shifter though and not up under the hood.... i have an 03 also. :(
