323 Opinions?

Hi folks--

Anyone have any experience with the old 323? In about 3 months I'll be selling my Protege in order to save more toward the purchase of a new car, and I've been considering a 323 as a temporary car to get me by while I'm saving up. Getting an inexpensive used car will allow me to not have any auto payments, thus allowing me to save more, faster.

Anyway, I know I can't expect too much in a late model car, but I'm been concerned about reliability and will need a car that can simply get me around with reasonable peace of mind. Comfort, size, looks, power, etc. won't be important at all-- It's all about simple transport (and hopefully okay fuel economy). Any old beater will do.

In my preliminary research on the net, I've heard good things about the 323, and have recently seen an add listing an '89 323 manual hatchback for $950 obo (US). No mileage was listed, but it said the car runs great.

So, anyone have opinions about the 323, and do you think it's possible to get a car this cheap that at least runs and stops (as in, the brakes work!) within tolerable limits?

Yeah, I'd get a 323, nice, cheap older car, that will run great if treated properly. Look for the 323 GT turbo AWD version, very nice little car, rally driver too. Research that car, interesting story. I'm thinking about buying one to be my cheap rally car, take it out on the trails or something.lol. Seriously, I'd hit it.
