2019 CX3 Petrol smell - One possible solution...

Just sharing this as I noticed I wasn't the only one with this smelly issue.

A couple of months ago I noticed a strong smell of petrol outside, and sometime inside, after a fill up. It would slowly dissipate as the tank emptied, but always came back after a fill up. My first searches all pointed to the EVAP system (the valve, or canister), or maybe the fuel cap...sometimes a cracked fuel filter hose or filler hose. I contacted a couple of garages who didn't want to go on a diagnosis hunt without any fault codes to show them the way, so today I decided to start tearing things apart myself.

Once I got the rear seats out and access to the fuel pump, there was a puddle of petrol in the bowl of the tank where the fuel pump sits. ALSO, the fuel pump collar was so loose I had to turn it practically 180* to get the small arrow to the "Min" marking.

I've only owned the car for just over a year, so no ideas how this could happen...until I remembered reading about a fuel pump recall. My best guess is it was taken in for the recall by the previous owner and the collar was never fully tightened after the pump was replaced.

If other owners have had the same shoddy workmanship, I offer this as a possible solution. Getting to the pump to check was a piece of cake, too.

Actually - Thanks for reminding me about this.

After putting a full tank of fuel into my 2015 Mazda 6 (2.5G) a few weeks ago, I noticed a faint but noticeable smell of raw fuel coming from the rear of the car. First time I ever noticed this.

I just refueled again like two days ago and have not noticed the smell this time.

If it continues, I'll investigate.
