2018 CX-5 Paint issues with Rear Spoiler

Happily had my CX-5 since 2019. Bought preowned and generally spotless in terms of dings, dents and paint. Just noticed that part of the paint on the plastic trim above the lift gate is starting to bubble and peel. I'm really surprised but also noted that others have had issues with paint, both on metal and non-metal surfaces. Attaching a few photos here - would love others opinions! Located in N. California.

If you are still in warranty, then YES absolutely. Run, don't walk to your dealer. This is only going to get worse.
Appreciate this response. I wish we were still in warranty, but alas we're not. Do people have success with Mazda for claiming paint defects outside of warranty? Otherwise, I might have to look into body shop out of pocket.

I never bothered to try. Mine started happening around year 8. I live in S. Florida so the sun is brutal. I feel there are too many variables for you to be able to claim paint defect. Do you know how the paint was cared for by the previous owner? Where was the car located before you took ownership? Was it garage kept?

Why not ask? They may do a goodwill repair. If not, at least that part can be removed and painted on its own. Less chance of over spray.

I have the same problem, even though the car is not garage. It still odd that it is only happening. On the grill on top right under the hood and then also and the rear right above the hatch liftgate.

I have a 2019 CX-5 bought new. This is spoiler on roof driver side. Noticed in March 2025. Brought to Mazda dealer, per instructions after contacting corporate, and dealer was to inspect and give their evaluation to corporate of cause. Two weeks passed, no word. Contacted corporate who claimed they never received any report from dealer. Long story short corporate advised me it was an environmental issue that caused the paint chipping. I have lived in Maryland since 1978, not in the seashore area, in the Baltimore area. My family has owned numerous cars , never has this happened to any of the vehicles. I also spoke to the dealer about the infotainment display experiencing the ghost touch. They advised me it’s been happening and $1900 to replace (out of warranty). If only I knew!!

That looks like the clear coat failed. Has the car been outdoors or garaged? I would think that part could be removed and repainted pretty reasonably.
