Hi all
My first forum post so please be gentle
I've got a 2018 CX-5 Sport Nav Plus AWD and I love the car except for the squeaks and rattles - I previously had a 2013 and I feel like the build quality of the trim has decreased. There were a lot of squeaks of dash trim rubbing against itself which I've resolved with felt tape but I have a problem that's big enough to make me consider getting rid of the car. It sounds like hard plastic on hard plastic and can vary from a light tap to a squeak like a creaking bed spring!
When the ambient temp is mild (around 18C-25C) and sun is shining on the dash, I get a terrible creak/tap sound from deep inside the dash behind the instrument binnacle on the driver's side (this is the UK so RHD). It's not dash trim panels, nor is it A/C, vents or heater fan. It's something deeper inside. I've tried to record it on my phone, but phones are designed to filter background noise so it sounds much more minor than it actually is.
The dealer is trying to help, but of course every time I bring it in they can't reproduce it. And then we take it home and it's happening all the time. it's so loud that passengers in the back seat will remark on it even with the radio on!
I've seen some recordings of similar sounds online which are suggested to have been either insufficient windscreen bonding or insufficient sealant on the Active Driving Display. I could get the windscreen re-fitted, but since I have a couple of chips there's a risk it'll crack and I'll have to pay for a new screen. And the Mazda fix for the Active Driving Display is to replace the thing, and that means removing the whole dash, total cost GBP 1600! Yikes.
What I'd really like to do is to be able to diagnose what the problem is. Honestly, it's so bad.
Also, although this is minor, a couple of months ago I started getting a high-pitched whistling sound on the driver's side which occurs between 50 and 60mph. This sounds much more trim-related and I've heard similar on a car which had a loose roof rail cover. But even this the mechanics can't hear! Can anyone advise what to check? I've looked at the roof rail panels and the trim around the base of the windscreen, which is loose and moveable but apparently it should be.
Thanks
