2017 CX-5 Soul Red Crystal Metallic

Do y'all think Mazda would offer free re-painting or something like that if it's a big enough issue? My car isn't that bad, just a few nicks, but from what others have said about theirs I'd think having crappy paint like that would hurt Mazda's reputation.

It's much cheaper to do some spot repainting than it is to due what Kia did for Stinger buyers. They offered to owners with paint chipping issues to repaint the effected panels or the whole car-buyer chooses which. Either way they get a $5000 payment for the inconvenience and obviously lowered vehicle value of having a new car with a body shop paint job. The owner can also choose tor return the car and get a brand new car to replace it in a different color. You see, building a reputation of standing behind your product so word of mouth helps you sell cars actually costs more money than getting by on the cheap.

Today is day 44 that our car has been at the dealer being repainted.

I have a 2016 black, and within less than 1 year, tons of chips. Most are along the doors and hood. I also have have tons of scratches near the door handle (its keyless-so how the heck could it be scratched so easily??). Just had chips touched up with Mazda paint. Per dealer and also the detailer (who painted the chips), they have all seen tons of complaints about the paint. Dealer said most complaints from 2017 models and up, but also had several complaints from 2016-not just mine.

Yeah by re-painting I meant just the affected parts. Just wondering if y*all thought it was a possibility. I understand it costs the manufacturer more money to fix it but practicing some lean-six sigma would mean producing higher quality products from the start.

Sorry to hear about your car, hopefully they do something else to make up for you having to go through that.

I have a 2017 soul red crystal. My hood has some major chipping. I brought it in for my oil change and mentioned it to the dealerships service director. He took pics with a camera and sent it to his regional Mazda rep. He followed up and wanted me to drop off the car when the rep was there. They put stickers next to ever chip and had to take pics at 4 different angles. When i went back to pick up my car, he said that they are repainting the whole car except the back hatch. I asked him why. He said/showed me that pretty much every panel had a chip. I thought that was excessive to repaint a door that had one chip. He told me the reason for it was they didnt want me to have to come back again because another panel is chipping in the future. He also mentioned that the Mazda rep said they are aware of the issue as he has seen a ton of these come in the Midwest where the rep was responsible. I now am waiting for them to call and setup a time. He said that the process should take a week and that they will take care of me with a loaner

It's a Mazda dealer so they put me in a CX-5. They have a fleet of loaners they use for service customers that they sell as CPO cars after a few months of service. The dealer and all my contacts there have been great, no issue with them whatsoever.

Mazda spent two of the six weeks beating the body shop down on the price of the work, so repainting my car in a timely manner is not a priority for the body shop. And since the original problem is with the color coats sticking to the primer, it means all four of the top coats (paint reflective, paint absorptive, tinted clear, and clear topcoat) have to be sanded off then reapplied onto fresh primer. And they have to blend the new paint going on most of the car to the back door and rear bumper which they refused to paint. So there could have been an issue with that process.

I was just about to ask if maybe they changed something with the paint process, or certain colors, for Gen 2 but it seems the problem was already at least somewhat there for Gen 1s.

Wife tried to unlock the wrong white CX-5 in a parking lot yesterday. She has been in a white Sport model for so long she has forgotten that our loaner doesn't have the tinted windows of a Touring or Grand Touring model.

That said, both my wife and I believe the paint seems a bit "duller" to us after the repaint...not as "shiny" or metallic as it was originally, in our opinion. Of course this is just our untrained eyes, but I was wondering if anyone else has noticed this after a repaint. I'm wondering if they're simply using the old Soul Red from 2016, rather than the Crystal Metallic. I'd probably have to park right next to a 2018 to notice...which I might do at some point.

Gen 1 vs Gen 2 soul reds look completely different, so I doubt it.

It's possible that perhaps the different process (I am assuming different...what caused the defect?) Slightly altered the appearance.

It would be VERY obvious if it was the old Gen 1 soul red. Sounds like soul red crystal just maybe not as brilliant?
