2013 CX-9 GT with Tech Pack

FYI, here are the differences between the 2013 and 2012-earlier models.\

Exterior-
Redesigned front end
Revised taillights and minor changes to rear end

Interior-

Standard touchscreen audio system on all models (navigation ready)
Two-tone leather replaced with solid-color perforated leather
Features-
All of the following apply to the Grand Touring models only-
Side view mirrors integrated into memory system with drivers seat position settings
Tilt-in-reverse drivers side mirror
Only the high-beams were Xenon (HID) on 2012 and earlier models; the 2013 has Bi-Xenon headlights
The Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry & Drive System & Power Liftgate (formerly optional) are now standard on GT models
Touring/Grand Touring models now have Rear Backup Sensors (sonar-based) and a revised, upgraded Rearview Camera system.

Now to answer your questions-


Other vehicles considered-
My cousin has a 2011 GMC Acadia and I had driven it a few times, which was enough to know that I didnt want one (or its siblings- the Chevy Traverse and Buick Enclave). The only others I considered were the Honda Pilot and the pricier Acura MDX (which is based the Pilot). I also drove the Infiniti JX35 Crossover just for comparison sake before I signed on the dotted line for the CX-9. It only reaffirmed that the CX-9 was the right choice.

DISLIKES- (they are few and rather petty)
-When approaching the vehicle, opening the Power Liftgate using the smart key/fob is needlessly complicated. You must first press the Unlock button twice to unlock all doors (including the back hatch), then you press and hold the OPEN button for 1-2 seconds until it starts opening. But you end up standing there waiting for it to open for 10-12 seconds..
-The backup camera is pretty useless. While it allows you to see if anything or anyone is behind you, it does NOTHING to help you when backing up. The 2013 has a larger, much more useful display and Backup Sensors (beeping) that remedy this problem.
-I was a bit surprised by the limited color options on the CX-9. Most competitors offer 8-10 or more colors to choose from. I loved the Liquid Silver Metallic, but it only came with Black interior and I wanted Sand interior. I narrowed it down to the Dolphin Gray and Crystal White Pearl, but like either of them nearly as much as the Silver. I ultimately picked the Pearl White, but sometimes wish I had gone with the Dolphin Gray instead (despite the odd green hue it has in certain lighting conditions). They added a color for 2013 called Meteor Gray that looks awesome on the CX-9 GT and it is available with Black or Sand interior, so its the one Id pick nowbut mine still looks sharp as long as I keep it spotless!

LIKES/LOVES-
(Ill generalize or well be here all night)
-Handling- it drives more like my Mazda3 than any other SUV/CUV. It drives like a much smaller vehicle and always feels glued to road.
-Performance- 273hp is pretty average for the mid-size/large CUV class, but the CX-9 feels faster than any Ive ever driven. A lot of the credit goes to the 6-speed Aisin automatic transmission, which I sometimes swear is telepathic! It always seems to be in the right gear and, when you need power, it will downshift two or even three gears almost instantly. It also has a nice, sporty growl (but never sounds unpleasant) which I enjoy.
- Interior comfort and Versatility- The 2nd row can be adjusted fore/aft by up to 11 or so to provide extra legroom for the 3rd row. It also tilts and slides forward to provide easy access to the 3rd row. The 3rd row seatbacks are a model of simplicity in terms or raising or lowering them. You simply pull on a nylon strap and fold it up or down. The front seats are comfortable even after 300 miles on the highway.
- Features- I love the Bose Audio System and the Blind Spot Monitor, as well as the little touches like the split-armrest and steering wheel controls for the Bluetooth hands-free phone and the audio system.
- Being different- I routinely have strangers ask what kind of car it is, followed by how much they like it!

I could go on and on, but Ill share a brief story with you that speaks volumes-

I have a cousin who lives in L.A. and she has spent the last three years battling and recovering from Inflammatory Breast Cancer. She had her final reconstructive surgery right before Thanksgiving (2012). Her mother is in a nursing home her in Georgia and she desperately wanted to come home for Christmas because her mom probably wont see another one. But due to some issues following her surgery, she wasnt cleared for travel.until December 23rd. So she paid several thousand dollars for last-minute airfare for the five of them and headed to Atlanta. She tried to arrange a rental car from her iPad while they were waiting to board at LAX, only to be told that she was out of luck!

But she knows theres always someone who will come through for her, no matter what- so called Cousin Jason (me)! I live about 70 miles away from the Atlanta airport, but I gladly offered to pick them up and take them to their hotel and find them a rental car. Five hours later, we were packing her and her hubby and three kids and their luggage into my new CX-9 (exactly 24 days old at that time).

I made some calls expecting to find a full-size sedan or SUV rental from one of my connections (Im an insurance agent). But everyone was booked solid. What I did next is proof that she (Cousin Joy) is by far my favorite cousin and actually is more like a sister to me and I adore her. I still have my 2006 Mazda3 (bought new in 2005) and my first thought was to offer to loan it to them while they were in town. Then I remembered a conversation we had during one of my visits to L.A. that neither of them had ever learned to drive a manual transmission. So I did the unthinkable, I insisted that they use my brand new CX-9 for the week!!!

They returned it with a full tank of gas and had it detailed the day before, so it was cleaner than when it was new. They also tried, in vain, to pay me. On the return trip to the airport, her and her hubby both kept raving about how much they loved it and even the kids loved it because they could access the 3rd row so easily.

They flew home on December 29th (2012). Two days later, on New Years Eve, Joy called me to wish me a Happy New Year.and to tell me that she was calling from her 2013 CX-9 Grand Touring! They had just traded in her 2008 Lexus GX470 (a $60k vehicle when new) on the CX-9! The dealer wasnt as surprised as they were expecting, until he showed them several other late-model Lexus SUV trade-ins on the used car lot! =)

The Acadia/Traverse/Enclave received a fairly heavy facelift for their 2013 models. The Acura MDX has a brand new frame/base for 2014 (not shared with any other vehicles at this point), as well, the previous gen MDX shared its base with the Accord and Pilot. Highlander is getting a new redesign in 2014 (already been shown, expected to go on sale early 2014). Pilot is expected to get a redesign in 2015, no news on this yet.

The Lexus GX series is based on the 4Runner, which is a truck base. It rides like a truck built for off-roading (as that's what it's meant for), and a lot of people buy it for the wrong reasons. The only crossover from Lexus is the RX350, which is too small for a lot of people (Lexus really needs to add a 3-row crossover). You won't see a lot of people trading in RX350/450 as they are pretty great vehicles (really awesome rides and nice fit & finish, but their tech is lagging compared to most manufacturers).

My 07 RL have had the following replaced so far:

1. Power steering pump $450
2. Front and rear left door actuators $750
3. Right door handle/sensor $400
4. Rear sway links and bushings $250

CPO covered:

1. Alternator $350
2. Complete center console (because of the bubbling arm rest) $???
3. Drive shaft $1,500
4. Driver-side HID bulb $80

My 2002 TL Type S (Purchased new) had 4 transmissions... forget the rest of the repairs.
 
Reading about the 2013 Santa Fe some more (LWB version is what most forums/review sites call it, for Long WheelBase version). This 6/7 seater seems to be getting quite a bit of love from the review community. The captains chairs are nice on the Santa Fe. My local Hyundai dealer seems to mainly carry those, and had very few bench seats available.

I would be interested to hear what Acura issues you have had, as they still seem to score well at Consumer Reports, and decent at JD Power.

As for the CX-9, my main issue with it is the same I have with the Enclave, it's just a little too long for me. Garages in my area are all built small (length wise), and fitting a 202 inch long vehicle into it will be rather difficult to do (probably need to mark the parking area so the door could close properly). Most other midsize crossovers are in the 190-194 inch range. That extra 10 inches makes a pretty big difference when trying to park it in my garage.

I don't know where you are on your stage in life, but if I was in the market now, as much as I like the Santa Fe styling, and equipment included for the $$, I'm not sure I'd seriously consider it--or if I did, I'd have to skip the top of the line version (Limited, I think?) because of the capt chairs. Yes, it provides better 3rd row access, but dropping down to 6 passenger capacity severely limits carpooling duties--especially during the stage where the carpool passengers aren't big enough to sit in the front seat. Yeah, I know--I'm lame...

You're not lame at all, totally valid point and I'm happy you brought it up. While it's not an issue for us right now, it will be very soon (and I plan on keeping whatever I buy until it dies). You are right, the Limited Santa Fe only has captains chairs (so 6 seats only), which is pretty annoying. The pilot definitely wins the total # of seats and LATCH hookups, but I don't plan on having 4 kids in LATCH required safety seats at once.

My other issue with the Sante Fe is the rattles. Reading around the Santa Fe reviews and forums I've seen a number of complaints about seats rattling and noises when sitting idle. These type of reports are driving the Santa Fe lower on my list.

Also, going back and watching various car reviews, I forgot how much reviewers liked the 2013 CX-9. I may have to go do another tour around this vehicle, but I'd say I'm torn between the CX-9, Pilot, and MDX (if I can convince my wife and myself that the MDX is worth the money). Between the Pilot and CX-9, I really liked the drive and overall feel of the CX-9, but the Pilot wins on length (shorter) and overall usable internal space. With the current pricing of the CX-9, it's a hard-to-beat deal.
 
I don't think the Acura is going to be as reliable and maintenance free as the Mazda. And the third row in the Acura is smaller than the CX-9. Interior of the Acura is overall smaller. The Pilot is a great kid hauler and soccer box vehicle, but to me the current Pilot is only that. The shifter is on the dash with no +/- sport mode, its boring on the inside, boring on the outside, is just made to go from point A to point B with no fuss and no frills. BOOOORING. lol.

And just look at this forum, all the support you have!
 
We are the happy new owners of a '13 CX-9 Touring with the Tech Package.
I wish I had found this forum while we were shopping, but I still think we would have come to the same conclusion.
I owned a Mazda 626 10+ years ago and loved the car.
Our kids (2) are grown and moved out, but my wife still wanted something that seated 6 or 7, for their BFs / GFs or when we go out with other couples.

We looked at the 2013 Santa Fe first, and liked it, although the rear seating was a little tight for adults. Then we looked at the 2014 Kia Sorento. Very nice, but almost too many techno-gadgets. (I'm a big tech nerd, but this was almost too much for me and I would have spent days training my wife). The Sorento we demo'd was their new DGI 4-cyl, which I was concerned about a 4-banger with 6 adults. Also looked at the Buick, GMC, and Chevy, but too trucky and the Ford Flex was just too ugly. The MDX was also nice, but about $10k more and a smaller back seat, I didn't see the value. We fell in love with the CX-9.
My wife wanted a nice leather interior with heated seats, Nav, nice stereo, and the works, and was dead set on white with a tan interior. They didn't have one in initially, so we test drove the black with black leather. Very nice, but wanted to avoid black on black. When they got the white in and she looked at it, she didn't care for the 2-tone exterior (white with the black cladding), mixed with the different 2-tone interior (Tan leather has black accents and carpet). I didn't disagree with her, I pick the car, she picks the colors. (Happy wife!)
They did have a Meteor Gray with a tan interior, which she liked even better, so we are very happy now. (funny, she originally said no Gray)

After we drove the CX-9, we drove the Hyundai again, and the Hyundai didn't feel as good in comparison and the interior felt cheaper. The CX-9 just felt and drove better, plus the rear seating was larger and easier to access. We also like the interior and exterior styling better on the Mazda. My wife is not a big music fan and usually asks me to turn the radio down, but when the sales-man turned the radio up, with the Bose speakers, my wife said WOW! I really like the sound in here! Now she changes stations and turns up the radio as I'm driving!

Yes, the smart-key is a learning curve (I think I finally figured it out) and the USB music will also take getting used to. (I had a 16gb jump drive, loaded with music, that I normally have plugged in my Pioneer HU. I plugged it into the Mazda and it is really corrupted and I can't find any of my albums / artists easily. I'll need to re-organize them). But the Siruis, HD, and Pandora radio are very nice. Lots of choices.

We are driving to Toronto, Canada (about 750+ miles) for a week vacation with my sister & brother-in-law next month and I can't wait with our new car!
We've only got about 100 miles on it right now, but really happy with our choice and it looks so good!

The CX-9 doesn't drive like it's almost a foot longer than the Pilot--it feels the same size, even smaller. Fits in my garage same as my 1st Gen Pilot, liftgate extended and all.

I don't know if you read my posting above from 7-2-2013, but I have a 2012 CX-9 GT and I was a little suprised in the limited color choices. I wanted the 'Sand' interior (and I don't do dark exterior colors, so Black and Stormy (Dark) Blue were off the table, as was the Copper Red) which left Crystal White Pearl and Dolphin Gray as my only two exterior color options. I chose the Crystal White Pearl, but part of me wishes that I had picked the Dolphin Gray (even though I wasn't crazy about the odd green-ish hue in certain lighting conditions). On the Pearl White, all the black plastic on the front upper and lower grille and the black lower body on the sides are kind of stark looking. But when it's clean, it still looks great!

But I also said that I wouldn't have the interior/exterior color choice dilemma on the 2013 because they added a new color called Meteor Grey and it is available with the Sand interior! So your wife has great taste!!!

1. New 2013/14 Jeep Grand Cherokee, or pre-owned Lexus RX 350
2. Its look/style, quality of ride, operational/driving ergonomics, room/cargo space + price wise.
3. Time will show. I'm newbie to CX-9 and it is my first experience with Mazda.
4. 5" Radio/NAVI display. I wish it to be larger.

6. My ownership of new 2013 CX-9 model is too young. Hard to say anything at this moment. I'll see how things will go and then can come up with wishlist for changes.
7. Not noisy vehicle at all if compare with my previously owned 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Nicely balanced suspension (not firm and not soft). Sense of vehicle's handling is up to individual perception of a driver. New CX-9 handling is pretty good to me. So far I like it.
 
Thanks again, everyone! I have thoroughly enjoyed reading your reviews and experiences. I still have not pull the trigger but the CX-9 is definitely on the top of my list. On a side note, my father purchased a CX-9 Touring via my recommendation and he loves the car! Maybe one day I'll become a proud owner of a Mazda CX-9. :)
